Green Lantern #23

Hal Jordan gas the worst logic.  Are they trying to make the Corps fail.

Things I liked: Kilowog knows the score.

Things I didn't like: Hal haring off for no good reason.  He knows better.  He's grown.  I guess not.

Green Lantern #22

They're building up another epic story.  I wish they'd just tell tell one story.

Things I liked: I knew she was going to betray her jailer.

Things I didn't like: I knew where this was going.  A little originality please.

Green Lantern #21

Poor Hal can't catch a break.  Back from the dead and can't keep a girlfriend.

Things I liked: Kyle and Hal have a fun relationship.  Wonder where Guy is.

Things I didn't like: she has to stop seeing him because she'll stop loving him?  Carol has odd ideas on how to be a Star Sapphire.

Flash #22

Here's my call: the reverse Flash is Dr. Elias.  It all points to him.

Things I liked: Barry's investigation.  Manapoul has done a good job of reinforcing that Barry is a scientist as well.

Things I didn't like: I really hope Iris doesn't have speed powers.

Flash #21

I was hoping to find out more about Bart here.  No luck.

Things I liked: tee hee, escape velocity.  Watching two speedsters try to chase each other done is always fun.

Things I didn't like: it didn't really resolve anything.

Earth 2 #15

Here's where the annual probably fits in.

Things I liked: Barda and Mr. Miracle are back.

Things I didn't like: I think I've missed a whole lot of action with Hawkgirl.

Earth 2 #14

Theres a reason the Justice Soceity never fought World War 2; they'd beat it too quickly.  I guess giving everyone Apokolips powers takes away that problem.

Things I liked: Alan thinks like I'd expect a media mogul to think.  I don't like his plan. It it does make internal logic.

Things I didn't like: the level of technology is bigger than I'd expect.

Earth 2 #13

Steel is an interesting choice.  He's not a conterpoint to anybody.

Things I liked: woo!  Batman!

Things I didn't like: Red Tornado is a vessel?

Demon Knights #23

Saw this one coming to an end.  It started out strong as a series and limped toward cancellation.

Things I liked: Ex and Ystin were always fun to watch.

Things I didn't like: why would they refer to themselves as Demon Knights?

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

Demon Knights #22

Another issue where things are speeding along.

Things I liked: everybody expected Savage to betray them, and he did.

Things I didn't like: the Grail healing Horsewoman.  Her disability was an interesting facet of her character.

Demon Knights #21

Jason Blood can be tricksy.

Things I liked: Blood had quite the little plan.  Savage might even appreciate it.

Things I didn't like: the art is not what I'm used to.  I think they're running toward the end.

Constantine #6

I thought this would take more than one issue.  There's a lot of people who don't like Constantine.

Things I liked: he's taking it very well for being mostly dead.

Things I liked: I feel like there was stuff left undone.  The idea had plenty of potential but it didn't really get explored.

Monday, November 25, 2013

Constantine #5

More of Constantine is a Dick.  I don't know why I'd be surprised that he took Billy for a ride.

Things I liked: it was a good trick though, and then to see him as a cape?  Awesome.

Things I didn't like: I missed where he got shot.  I'm not sure why he died.

Sunday, November 24, 2013

Constantine #4

John Constantine isn't a good man.  He's not a bad one either.  I'm not sure what to make of Constantine.

Things I liked: the tidy little circle the issue produced.  Nice bit of storytelling.

Things I didn't like: art was a little rushed looking.  Still not bad.

Catwoman #22

Um... Right.  Madness underground it is.

Things I liked: I had been wondering about the Gotham Underground.  I guess now is as good a time as any to find out about it.

Things I didn't like: madness.  This seems to be bigger madness than Catwoman often deals with.

Catwoman Annual #1

Although issue #21 makes more sense, the whole story feels disjointed.

Things I liked: at its core it has the potential to be a really good Penguin story.

Things I didn't like: it just isn't.  The motivations aren't there and there feels like there's bits missing.

Thursday, November 21, 2013

Catwoman #21

I'm a little out of order here so maybe it'll make more sense whe I've read the annual.

Things I liked: Penguin's molls are amusing.  Why wouldn't they talk about their job?

Things I didn't like: this gang war seems over the top, even for Gotham.

Batwoman #23

The Flamebird portion of the story at least made sense.

Things I liked: Bette takes over.  I don't know theta her way would work, but it was different.

Things I didn't like: taking fear toxin the night before a big mission has to be the dumbest thing I've seen in a while.

Batwoman #22

Of all the Batman villains to pick, why those three unknowns?

Things I liked: Kate knows that preparation is the key.

Things I didn't like: where exactly is Bette running these simulations?

Batwoman #21

Poor Killer Croc.  Nobody understands him.

Things I liked: I like this new, misunderstood Croc.  He's like the dumb guy that knows his limitations and isn't afraid to admit it.  It is sad that his proudest moment is that time he beat the piss out of Batman.

Things I didn't like: since when can Flamebird fly?

Batman Incorporated Special #1

I wish this had a bit more from the good Batmen and less of the bad ones.

Things I liked: the Squire had a good story, as did the three amigos.

Things I didn't like: still don't like the Batman of Japan.

Batman Incorporated #13

What a lame ending.  It just didn't work.

Things I liked: Batman Incorporated is no more.

Things I didn't like: Bruce is taking all of this a little too well.

Tuesday, November 19, 2013

Batman Incorporated #12

How is Bruce getting out of this with teeth?

Things I liked: how Grant Morrison writes Dick Grayson.

Things I didn't like: so huge man has a literal baby face?  That's dumb.

Aquaman #22

Hmm... Interesting.

Things I liked: very ten spider moment between Arthur and Mera.

Things I didn't like: there seems to be a lot going on here.  Some of it makes sense (I expected Mera's people to bow to the dead king) and some if it doesn't (how did Scavenger take over Atlantis?).

Aquaman #21

Aquaman's status as king has always been odd.  In most portrayals he doesn't want to be king and the Atlanteans don't either.  Yet he is.

Things I liked: Aquaman kicking some ass.  Ripping open the sub was a power move.

Things I didn't like: Mera's husband.  It's a setup and everybody knows it yet we have to sit through it anyway.

Monday, November 18, 2013

Animal Man #23

Brother Blood has taken his name a little too literally.

Things I liked: good pacing.  This story is clipping along but doesn't feel rushed.

Things I didn't like: why would drinking Buddy's blood make Blood more powerful?

Animal Man #22

Creepy.  That is creepy.

Things I liked: this feels like the Animal Man I know.  Creepy.

Things I didn't like: Maxine made a pretty good Cliff.  I would've thought the shell would look lumper.

Animal Man #21

I enjoyed the last arc so much I'll give this one time to develop.

Things I liked: Animal Man and social media.  That works.

Things I didn't like: Maxine's plan to bring Cliff back from the dead.

All Star Western #22

I'd assumed hevwas further in the future because of the Feank Millerites.  Now I don't know.

Things I liked: Jonah just doesn't quit.

Things I didn't like: so there are mutants.  That means it's quite far in the future, but Bruce isn't an old Batman.  I'm confused.

All-Star Western #21

I never read any of the stories where Jonah went to the future... I don't think they were anything like this.

Things I liked: the lettering when he woke up was almost 3D.  It crawled across my screen.

Things I didn't like: can't get away from Frank Miller's Gotham, huh?

Batman Black and White #3

My favourite things about this story is just how much leeway the authors have.  Comics have changed a lot since Marv Wolfman's time and it shows.

Things I liked: both a strong opening and a strong closer in this one.

Things I didn't like: it's not that I didn't like the story by the graphic designer, it just wasn't my style.

Batman/Superman #5

Yay!  Nightwing!  Sort of.

Things I liked: there's obviously been a time jump here and the two heroes are used to working with each other, and their friends.  Batman just has a hard time accepting that.  I love that Superman trolls him.

Things I didn't like: I don't know about this new Toyman, it's a little over the top.

Forever Evil #3

I was really hoping that the answer after the one panel pause was going to be "my son".

Things I liked: Geoff Johns really likes writing Lex Luthor.  It's pretty obvious.

Things I didn't like: there's a few too many things going on.  While I really want to see more of Nightwing I think there's some other, more important, threads to tie up first.  At least now I understand what the prison is.

Detective Comics #25

My favourite Batman stories are those that are about him, but don't necessarily have him in it.  This was another great example.

Things I liked: James Gordon is a very cool character.  Being the only clean cop in Gotham is a tough haul.  The story of how he started to come around to Batman was great.

Things I didn't like: still can't get used to the new 52 Bullock.  With his rugged good looks and personal hygiene skills.

Green Arrow #25

Zero Year is such a good idea when they've got the Forever Evil thing happening.

Things I liked: their first meeting is very much like Batman Brave and the Bold.  Arguing with each other while punching the same bad guy.

Things I didn't like: if your mom is able to make you on your first day out when you're supposed to be dead, you might want to reconsider the whole secret identity thing.

Batman/Superman #4

The last issue was all about their differences, this one's about their similarities.

Things I liked: the internal dialogue was spot on.  I especially liked when they were deciding it was time to team up.

Things I didn't like: I can't really think of anything.  This was good all 'round.

Damian: Son of Batman #1

I really hope that was Dick Grayson under the cowl.  Not because I want him to die, but because it makes sense.  From Damian's age, the name of his journal, and frankly, Bruce's appearance at the end.  It doesn't work with Talia's description of his conception, but ew.

Things I liked: Damian grew on me.  I was disappointed when they killed.  If any character can come back from the dead though, it's the grandson of Ra's al'Ghul.

Things I didn't like: Kubert seemed to have trouble with the character.  His pattern went from pretentious (what I expect) to sulky teen (unexpected).  A consistent tone would have worked better.

Nightwing Annual #1

I really like the relationship that Dick and Babs have.  It feels very real.

Things I liked: Dick is an old softie.  And he knows it.  Although he does have terrible timing.

Things I didn't like: the art was a little weird in places, but this was solid overall.

Teen Titans Annual #2

I like Superboy.  I read Superboy.  I have no idea where "The Son of Superman" comes in.  Once again, Scott Lobdell seems to have left out an important piece of information.  Though I did enjoy the flashback to the nineties look from the "Reign of the Supermen".

Things I liked: Red Robin feels right.  This is the sort of thing he'd do.

Things I didn't like: why is Gar green?  Did the colorist not get the memo?  How did it get to press?   They surprised me when they made him red, but they can't just change him back.  And I don't like the whole "one of them has betrayed us".  We know it has to be Raven.  If it's anyone other than Raven the writing is terrible.

Justice League #24

I know it's not subtle, but I love it when they do variants of "classic" covers.

Things I liked: motivation.  It's trying to give motivation to the characters.

Things I didn't like: Ultraman's a dick.  Not that he shouldn't be; his dickery just doesn't make sense.  They tried to make him exactly opposite to Superman.  Some things worked (Ma and Pa Kent).  Some things didn't (Jimmy Olsen, pornographer).

Friday, November 8, 2013

Teen Titans #24

So... How does Red Robin know what's going on?

Things I liked: interesting idea, I don't think they're carrying it through well.

Things I didn't like: there's stuff happening that I don't think the characters could really make happen.

Batman: the Dark Knight #24

The story's better.  The art was bad though.

Things I liked: I almost felt sorry for Clayface.  He's really a very small man.

Things I didn't like: I don't understand the Penguin connection.

Superman/Wonder Woman #1

Doomsday on Earth makes more sense.

Things I liked: they have an actual relationship.  I'm glad so much was spent on Clark and Diana.

Things I didn't like: heels on Wonder Woman.  It's a pet peeve of mine.

Doomsday #1

Hrm.

Things I liked: Zod makes more sense.  Lara deserves to be more than the cringing wife and Kara hasn't changed.

Things I didn't like: Doomsday on Krypton.

Batman/Superman #3

Darkseid, huh?  This explains a bit more.

Things I liked: "The S doesn't stand for hope, does it?"

Things I didn't like: it's always Darkseid.  He's the go to baddie right now.

Batman/Superman #2

I get lost in the panels.

Things I liked: Batman figures it out by fighting.  Superman by his mom telling him it's so.  Very characterful.

Things I didn't like: lots of holes.  Some are fine, and make sense, too many and it's hard to keep track.

Batman/Superman #1

I wasn't going to do it, but the art won me over.

Things I liked: the art is fantastic, especially in the first section.  Gotham city is menacing.  Metropolis is not.  And that carries over into its guardian.

Things I didn't like: I lost the focus of the story.  I'm pretty sure there's an alternate Batman and Superman here but I'm not sure why.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #24

I hope this storyline finishes up soon.  It's a bit too mystical for me.

Things I liked: Roy continues to impress.  I like what he and Cheshire have going on.

Things I didn't like: too much magic for a Batman book.

Wonder Woman #24

Hermes is right.  I hope she comes to see that.

Things I liked: Wonder Woman as War continues to have interesting complications.

Things I didn't like: Hera is losing it.

Justice League of America #8

So they're not quite dead yet.  Like that's a big surprise.

Things I liked: there's more to Stargirl than it appears.  Nice to see J'ohnn back in his element and the nod to Superman: the movie was fun.

Things I didn't like: that explains the Leagues, what about everyone else?

Sunday, November 3, 2013

Cheetah #1

My favourite Manhunter!  I actually do remember the Mark Shaw Manhunter.  I know there have been many but he's the one I know.

Things I liked: this was a very different take on Cheetah.  I know as they've upped Wonder Woman they've had to up some of her villains as well.  From that perspective she makes sense.  Otherwise...

Things I didn't like: a modern day cult?  Set up as a religious school.  I'm not sure that's within the boundaries of acceptance.

Deathstroke #1

I was expecting a little more from Deathstroke.  He is one of the A villains.

Things I liked: he's not a monster.  It would be easy to show him as such.

Things I didn't like: there's Grant and Rose, but where's Joseph?

Saturday, November 2, 2013

Batman and Robin #24

This one's a stretch.

Things I liked: it's still a good story.  Batman versus the mob is usually a good story.

Things I didn't like: it wasn't that the changed the person who scarred Dent into a woman.  It wasn't even that she somehow managed to overpower him and tie him to a desk.  It was that she didn't do it in open court.  I've always felt that was a very fundamental part of the story.
