Talon #10

I really enjoyed the art for this issue.  It was really dynamic.

Things I liked: Calvin goes all in.  Not to the Talons but in getting his girls free.

Things I didn't like: mixed up the timeline a little.  What happened last issue didn't make sense with what happened here.

Sunday, December 29, 2013

Talon #9

I don't remember Calvin having a goatee.  I hate goatees.

Things I liked: that he's still trying to not do what they want.

Things I didn't like: yeah, that guest starred the Birds of Prey.  Really, all two panels.

Swamp Things #23

I can see Constantine drunk, just not like this.

Things I liked: Holland using his brain.  It's easy to think of him as only the monster.

Things I didn't like: not the best characterization of Constantine, it could have been any Mage.

Swamp Thing #22

So nice to see Constantine and Swamp Thing together again.

Things I liked: yes, John Constantine is a liar.

Things I didn't like: it's not like Constantine to let himself be caught.

Swamp Thing #21

Alec Holland is a very hard man to grasp.  This new team has started out well.

Things I liked: Capucine has a story I want to know.

Things I didn't like: how can an avatar be killed when it's already dead?

Superman #23

I skipped the annual.  Doesn't seem like much happened.

Things I liked: I like when Superman has to solve a problem without punching it.

Things I didn't like: I can't believe it's the Psycho Pirate.

Saturday, December 28, 2013

Superman #22

This is actually more intriguing than I thought it would be.

Things I liked: the Twenty has potential.

Things I didn't like: Superman going off the deep end like that.  It seemed off.

Superman #21

Sometimes I'm reading along and something screams, "Foreshadowing!"  That never turns out well.

Things I liked: Superman musing on the perils of him being penniless.  It's something that makes him more human.

Things I didn't like: self-centered much?  Does it really have to be all about him?

Sunday, December 15, 2013

Supergirl #23

Hrm... I wonder how they'll unkill her.

Things I liked: not much really.  This was just a big battle thrown around a recap of what she's done in the last 2 years.

Things I didn't like: Cyborg Sperman as Zoe-El.

Supergirl #22

More terrible things happen to her when she's not willing to willing to give up on Krypton.

Things I liked: at least she realizes the problem.

Things I didn't like: it's just the same story.

Thursday, December 12, 2013

Supergirl #21

One of these days the story is not going to start with her being stupid.

Things I liked: interesting concept.  I can't see it end well though.

Things I didn't like: she needs new motivation.  Everything is about Krypton.

Superboy #23

Psycho Pirate?  Wally and Donna are no longer in the DCU but Psycho Oirate is?

Things I liked: when Superboy actually thinks he's pretty smart.  I like that he often lets his emotions lead.

Things I didn't like: he's bad with secret identities.

Superboy #22

Superboy in high school.  This can't go well.

Things I liked: his brutal honesty is always fun to read.

Things I didn't like: why is he hanging with Dr. Psycho again?

Wednesday, December 11, 2013

Superboy #21

I've missed reading Superboy.

Things I liked: Superboy is snarky.

Things I didn't like: I feel like I've missed something, specifically, where did Krypto come from?

The Movement #4

I feel this grew out of the the 99% thing of last year.  It's an interesting idea but I don't see the hope in it.

Things I liked: getting to know the characters even a little but more has drawn me in a little more.

Things I didn't like: it was Virtue that I really wanted the back story on.  Though I do like Burden.

The Movement #3

I still don't get what their plan is.

Things I liked: the murder is interesting.

Things I didn't like: if their beef is with the police then they are doing something, but their power level says they should be doing so,etching else.

Tuesday, December 10, 2013

The Movement #2

I really like Gail Simone so I'm giving this title a chance.  It's not really gripping me.

Things I liked: the relations between the characters are very interesting.  They feel real.

Things I didn't like: the motivation on the other hand... I don't get the payoff for the cops or the "heroes".

King's Watch #2

Swagger.  Flash has it.

Things I liked: everybody makes sense so far.  Using Lothar and the Phantom together neatly closes some holes.

Things I didn't like: I don't get where Dale works into this.  She's probably the hardest character to modernize.

Vibe #7

Much better.  I think the artist may hvae taken a month off.

Things I liked: Gypsey's story is slowly unraveling.

Things I didn't like: I don't like that they've made Gypsey such a focus of this story but I do like what they're trying to build.

Vibe #6

My opinion of ARGUS has diminished.  Vibe's brother should not be able to track down operatives at home.

Things I liked: I like looking for familiar faces in the inter dimensional cells.

Things I didn't like: the issue was a bit meh.  I get that's it's setting things up but it didn't really lush the story forward in a way that made sense.

Tuesday, December 3, 2013

Green Lantern New Guardians #23

I'm sad.  The Blue Lanterns just can't cut a break.

Things I liked: this story is driven by these issues.  The other Lantern titles have not been doing it justice.

Things I didn't like: while I don't like the spectrum, I don't think you can put the genie back in the bottle.

Green Lantern New Guardians #22

If I'd started this whole Rekic thing with these issues rather than Green Lantern I might have enjoyed it more.

Things I liked: Relic's plan actually makes sense.  That doesn't happen too often.

Things I didn't like: uh oh.  Looks like Carol and Hal may be turning into Carol and Kyle.

Green Lantern New Guardians #21

It's not often that the art inside is better than the cover.  I was pleasantly surprised.

Things I liked: Kyle grew a backbone.

Things I didn't like: these new Guardians aren't much different than the old.

Monday, December 2, 2013

Green Lantern Corps #23

Tee hee!  The Green Lanterns have a shark living in their battery.

Things I liked: nice use of the rookies.  Every Lantern gas a purpose.

Things I didn't like: that tether is awfully convenient.

Green Lantern Corps #22

Ugh!  There's actual beings to represent each lantern?

Things I liked: John takes charge.  He's turned into such a with it character.

Things I didn't like: I really doubt that Kyle will actually be able to help.

Saturday, November 30, 2013

Green Lantern #23

Hal Jordan gas the worst logic.  Are they trying to make the Corps fail.

Things I liked: Kilowog knows the score.

Things I didn't like: Hal haring off for no good reason.  He knows better.  He's grown.  I guess not.

Thursday, November 28, 2013

Green Lantern #22

They're building up another epic story.  I wish they'd just tell tell one story.

Things I liked: I knew she was going to betray her jailer.

Things I didn't like: I knew where this was going.  A little originality please.

Green Lantern #21

Poor Hal can't catch a break.  Back from the dead and can't keep a girlfriend.

Things I liked: Kyle and Hal have a fun relationship.  Wonder where Guy is.

Things I didn't like: she has to stop seeing him because she'll stop loving him?  Carol has odd ideas on how to be a Star Sapphire.

Flash #22

Here's my call: the reverse Flash is Dr. Elias.  It all points to him.

Things I liked: Barry's investigation.  Manapoul has done a good job of reinforcing that Barry is a scientist as well.

Things I didn't like: I really hope Iris doesn't have speed powers.

Flash #21

I was hoping to find out more about Bart here.  No luck.

Things I liked: tee hee, escape velocity.  Watching two speedsters try to chase each other done is always fun.

Things I didn't like: it didn't really resolve anything.

Wednesday, November 27, 2013

Earth 2 #15

Here's where the annual probably fits in.

Things I liked: Barda and Mr. Miracle are back.

Things I didn't like: I think I've missed a whole lot of action with Hawkgirl.

Earth 2 #14

Theres a reason the Justice Soceity never fought World War 2; they'd beat it too quickly.  I guess giving everyone Apokolips powers takes away that problem.

Things I liked: Alan thinks like I'd expect a media mogul to think.  I don't like his plan. It it does make internal logic.

Things I didn't like: the level of technology is bigger than I'd expect.

Earth 2 #13

Steel is an interesting choice.  He's not a conterpoint to anybody.

Things I liked: woo!  Batman!

Things I didn't like: Red Tornado is a vessel?

Demon Knights #23

Saw this one coming to an end.  It started out strong as a series and limped toward cancellation.

Things I liked: Ex and Ystin were always fun to watch.

Things I didn't like: why would they refer to themselves as Demon Knights?

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

Demon Knights #22

Another issue where things are speeding along.

Things I liked: everybody expected Savage to betray them, and he did.

Things I didn't like: the Grail healing Horsewoman.  Her disability was an interesting facet of her character.

Demon Knights #21

Jason Blood can be tricksy.

Things I liked: Blood had quite the little plan.  Savage might even appreciate it.

Things I didn't like: the art is not what I'm used to.  I think they're running toward the end.

Constantine #6

I thought this would take more than one issue.  There's a lot of people who don't like Constantine.

Things I liked: he's taking it very well for being mostly dead.

Things I liked: I feel like there was stuff left undone.  The idea had plenty of potential but it didn't really get explored.

Monday, November 25, 2013

Constantine #5

More of Constantine is a Dick.  I don't know why I'd be surprised that he took Billy for a ride.

Things I liked: it was a good trick though, and then to see him as a cape?  Awesome.

Things I didn't like: I missed where he got shot.  I'm not sure why he died.

Sunday, November 24, 2013

Constantine #4

John Constantine isn't a good man.  He's not a bad one either.  I'm not sure what to make of Constantine.

Things I liked: the tidy little circle the issue produced.  Nice bit of storytelling.

Things I didn't like: art was a little rushed looking.  Still not bad.

Catwoman #22

Um... Right.  Madness underground it is.

Things I liked: I had been wondering about the Gotham Underground.  I guess now is as good a time as any to find out about it.

Things I didn't like: madness.  This seems to be bigger madness than Catwoman often deals with.

Saturday, November 23, 2013

Catwoman Annual #1

Although issue #21 makes more sense, the whole story feels disjointed.

Things I liked: at its core it has the potential to be a really good Penguin story.

Things I didn't like: it just isn't.  The motivations aren't there and there feels like there's bits missing.

Thursday, November 21, 2013

Catwoman #21

I'm a little out of order here so maybe it'll make more sense whe I've read the annual.

Things I liked: Penguin's molls are amusing.  Why wouldn't they talk about their job?

Things I didn't like: this gang war seems over the top, even for Gotham.

Batwoman #23

The Flamebird portion of the story at least made sense.

Things I liked: Bette takes over.  I don't know theta her way would work, but it was different.

Things I didn't like: taking fear toxin the night before a big mission has to be the dumbest thing I've seen in a while.

Batwoman #22

Of all the Batman villains to pick, why those three unknowns?

Things I liked: Kate knows that preparation is the key.

Things I didn't like: where exactly is Bette running these simulations?

Batwoman #21

Poor Killer Croc.  Nobody understands him.

Things I liked: I like this new, misunderstood Croc.  He's like the dumb guy that knows his limitations and isn't afraid to admit it.  It is sad that his proudest moment is that time he beat the piss out of Batman.

Things I didn't like: since when can Flamebird fly?

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

Batman Incorporated Special #1

I wish this had a bit more from the good Batmen and less of the bad ones.

Things I liked: the Squire had a good story, as did the three amigos.

Things I didn't like: still don't like the Batman of Japan.

Batman Incorporated #13

What a lame ending.  It just didn't work.

Things I liked: Batman Incorporated is no more.

Things I didn't like: Bruce is taking all of this a little too well.

Tuesday, November 19, 2013

Batman Incorporated #12

How is Bruce getting out of this with teeth?

Things I liked: how Grant Morrison writes Dick Grayson.

Things I didn't like: so huge man has a literal baby face?  That's dumb.

Aquaman #22

Hmm... Interesting.

Things I liked: very ten spider moment between Arthur and Mera.

Things I didn't like: there seems to be a lot going on here.  Some of it makes sense (I expected Mera's people to bow to the dead king) and some if it doesn't (how did Scavenger take over Atlantis?).

Aquaman #21

Aquaman's status as king has always been odd.  In most portrayals he doesn't want to be king and the Atlanteans don't either.  Yet he is.

Things I liked: Aquaman kicking some ass.  Ripping open the sub was a power move.

Things I didn't like: Mera's husband.  It's a setup and everybody knows it yet we have to sit through it anyway.

Monday, November 18, 2013

Animal Man #23

Brother Blood has taken his name a little too literally.

Things I liked: good pacing.  This story is clipping along but doesn't feel rushed.

Things I didn't like: why would drinking Buddy's blood make Blood more powerful?

Animal Man #22

Creepy.  That is creepy.

Things I liked: this feels like the Animal Man I know.  Creepy.

Things I didn't like: Maxine made a pretty good Cliff.  I would've thought the shell would look lumper.

Animal Man #21

I enjoyed the last arc so much I'll give this one time to develop.

Things I liked: Animal Man and social media.  That works.

Things I didn't like: Maxine's plan to bring Cliff back from the dead.

Sunday, November 17, 2013

All Star Western #22

I'd assumed hevwas further in the future because of the Feank Millerites.  Now I don't know.

Things I liked: Jonah just doesn't quit.

Things I didn't like: so there are mutants.  That means it's quite far in the future, but Bruce isn't an old Batman.  I'm confused.

All-Star Western #21

I never read any of the stories where Jonah went to the future... I don't think they were anything like this.

Things I liked: the lettering when he woke up was almost 3D.  It crawled across my screen.

Things I didn't like: can't get away from Frank Miller's Gotham, huh?

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Batman Black and White #3

My favourite things about this story is just how much leeway the authors have.  Comics have changed a lot since Marv Wolfman's time and it shows.

Things I liked: both a strong opening and a strong closer in this one.

Things I didn't like: it's not that I didn't like the story by the graphic designer, it just wasn't my style.

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Batman/Superman #5

Yay!  Nightwing!  Sort of.

Things I liked: there's obviously been a time jump here and the two heroes are used to working with each other, and their friends.  Batman just has a hard time accepting that.  I love that Superman trolls him.

Things I didn't like: I don't know about this new Toyman, it's a little over the top.

Monday, November 11, 2013

Forever Evil #3

I was really hoping that the answer after the one panel pause was going to be "my son".

Things I liked: Geoff Johns really likes writing Lex Luthor.  It's pretty obvious.

Things I didn't like: there's a few too many things going on.  While I really want to see more of Nightwing I think there's some other, more important, threads to tie up first.  At least now I understand what the prison is.

Detective Comics #25

My favourite Batman stories are those that are about him, but don't necessarily have him in it.  This was another great example.

Things I liked: James Gordon is a very cool character.  Being the only clean cop in Gotham is a tough haul.  The story of how he started to come around to Batman was great.

Things I didn't like: still can't get used to the new 52 Bullock.  With his rugged good looks and personal hygiene skills.

Green Arrow #25

Zero Year is such a good idea when they've got the Forever Evil thing happening.

Things I liked: their first meeting is very much like Batman Brave and the Bold.  Arguing with each other while punching the same bad guy.

Things I didn't like: if your mom is able to make you on your first day out when you're supposed to be dead, you might want to reconsider the whole secret identity thing.

Batman/Superman #4

The last issue was all about their differences, this one's about their similarities.

Things I liked: the internal dialogue was spot on.  I especially liked when they were deciding it was time to team up.

Things I didn't like: I can't really think of anything.  This was good all 'round.

Sunday, November 10, 2013

Damian: Son of Batman #1

I really hope that was Dick Grayson under the cowl.  Not because I want him to die, but because it makes sense.  From Damian's age, the name of his journal, and frankly, Bruce's appearance at the end.  It doesn't work with Talia's description of his conception, but ew.

Things I liked: Damian grew on me.  I was disappointed when they killed.  If any character can come back from the dead though, it's the grandson of Ra's al'Ghul.

Things I didn't like: Kubert seemed to have trouble with the character.  His pattern went from pretentious (what I expect) to sulky teen (unexpected).  A consistent tone would have worked better.

Nightwing Annual #1

I really like the relationship that Dick and Babs have.  It feels very real.

Things I liked: Dick is an old softie.  And he knows it.  Although he does have terrible timing.

Things I didn't like: the art was a little weird in places, but this was solid overall.

Teen Titans Annual #2

I like Superboy.  I read Superboy.  I have no idea where "The Son of Superman" comes in.  Once again, Scott Lobdell seems to have left out an important piece of information.  Though I did enjoy the flashback to the nineties look from the "Reign of the Supermen".

Things I liked: Red Robin feels right.  This is the sort of thing he'd do.

Things I didn't like: why is Gar green?  Did the colorist not get the memo?  How did it get to press?   They surprised me when they made him red, but they can't just change him back.  And I don't like the whole "one of them has betrayed us".  We know it has to be Raven.  If it's anyone other than Raven the writing is terrible.

Saturday, November 9, 2013

Justice League #24

I know it's not subtle, but I love it when they do variants of "classic" covers.

Things I liked: motivation.  It's trying to give motivation to the characters.

Things I didn't like: Ultraman's a dick.  Not that he shouldn't be; his dickery just doesn't make sense.  They tried to make him exactly opposite to Superman.  Some things worked (Ma and Pa Kent).  Some things didn't (Jimmy Olsen, pornographer).

Friday, November 8, 2013

Teen Titans #24

So... How does Red Robin know what's going on?

Things I liked: interesting idea, I don't think they're carrying it through well.

Things I didn't like: there's stuff happening that I don't think the characters could really make happen.

Thursday, November 7, 2013

Batman: the Dark Knight #24

The story's better.  The art was bad though.

Things I liked: I almost felt sorry for Clayface.  He's really a very small man.

Things I didn't like: I don't understand the Penguin connection.

Superman/Wonder Woman #1

Doomsday on Earth makes more sense.

Things I liked: they have an actual relationship.  I'm glad so much was spent on Clark and Diana.

Things I didn't like: heels on Wonder Woman.  It's a pet peeve of mine.

Doomsday #1

Hrm.

Things I liked: Zod makes more sense.  Lara deserves to be more than the cringing wife and Kara hasn't changed.

Things I didn't like: Doomsday on Krypton.

Batman/Superman #3

Darkseid, huh?  This explains a bit more.

Things I liked: "The S doesn't stand for hope, does it?"

Things I didn't like: it's always Darkseid.  He's the go to baddie right now.

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

Batman/Superman #2

I get lost in the panels.

Things I liked: Batman figures it out by fighting.  Superman by his mom telling him it's so.  Very characterful.

Things I didn't like: lots of holes.  Some are fine, and make sense, too many and it's hard to keep track.

Batman/Superman #1

I wasn't going to do it, but the art won me over.

Things I liked: the art is fantastic, especially in the first section.  Gotham city is menacing.  Metropolis is not.  And that carries over into its guardian.

Things I didn't like: I lost the focus of the story.  I'm pretty sure there's an alternate Batman and Superman here but I'm not sure why.

Tuesday, November 5, 2013

Red Hood and the Outlaws #24

I hope this storyline finishes up soon.  It's a bit too mystical for me.

Things I liked: Roy continues to impress.  I like what he and Cheshire have going on.

Things I didn't like: too much magic for a Batman book.

Wonder Woman #24

Hermes is right.  I hope she comes to see that.

Things I liked: Wonder Woman as War continues to have interesting complications.

Things I didn't like: Hera is losing it.

Justice League of America #8

So they're not quite dead yet.  Like that's a big surprise.

Things I liked: there's more to Stargirl than it appears.  Nice to see J'ohnn back in his element and the nod to Superman: the movie was fun.

Things I didn't like: that explains the Leagues, what about everyone else?

Sunday, November 3, 2013

Cheetah #1

My favourite Manhunter!  I actually do remember the Mark Shaw Manhunter.  I know there have been many but he's the one I know.

Things I liked: this was a very different take on Cheetah.  I know as they've upped Wonder Woman they've had to up some of her villains as well.  From that perspective she makes sense.  Otherwise...

Things I didn't like: a modern day cult?  Set up as a religious school.  I'm not sure that's within the boundaries of acceptance.

Deathstroke #1

I was expecting a little more from Deathstroke.  He is one of the A villains.

Things I liked: he's not a monster.  It would be easy to show him as such.

Things I didn't like: there's Grant and Rose, but where's Joseph?

Saturday, November 2, 2013

Batman and Robin #24

This one's a stretch.

Things I liked: it's still a good story.  Batman versus the mob is usually a good story.

Things I didn't like: it wasn't that the changed the person who scarred Dent into a woman.  It wasn't even that she somehow managed to overpower him and tie him to a desk.  It was that she didn't do it in open court.  I've always felt that was a very fundamental part of the story.

Thursday, October 31, 2013

Voltron #12

I can't fall if that was the last issue of if Dynamite is just slow getting things to digital.

Things I liked: good story.  Linking the whole thing to Hunk's letter of resignation gave a feeling of melancholy that I don't think they could have has otherwise.

Things I didn't like: some of the art is still off model.  It's weird.

Talon #8

They finally did it.  They killed Calvin Rose.

Things I liked: I thought the resurrection page was quite powerful.

Things I didn't like: his open top cowl makes less sense with him dead.

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

Sword of Sorcery #8

I wish this series had a little more time to develop the story.

Things I liked: the mythology of Gemworld was interesting.  I would have liked more.

Things I didn't like: the people of Gemworld must be idiots.  There's no other reason to follow Amy blindly.

Tuesday, October 29, 2013

Superman #20

Orion is awesome as always.  I should push for him to get his own title.

Things I liked: that full page spread of Superman punching Orion through the museum was amazing.

Things I dint like: resolution by Wonder Woman.  Good thing she showed up.  Not like men could figure it out on their own.

Supergirl #20

I don't remember Supergirl's house being this sassy, but I like it.

Things I liked: the dialogue was sharp this issue.  It was just a battle but it seemed like more.

Things I didn't like: maybe the robot, it implies there's more of this fight to come.

Ravagers #12

This series had potential and then it turned into one big fight scene after another.  Bleh.

Things I liked: hey she's a clone!  I was just wondering what was up with Caitlyn Fairchild.

Things I didn't like: so Deathstroke shows up and kills everybody.  Except his knife is actually a teleportation blade so they're all just back with Harvest.  Except Rose and Terra, 'cause Deathstroke likes little girls?  Sure, one is his daughter, but why Terra?

Thursday, October 24, 2013

King's Watch #1

My favourite cartoon as a kid was Defenders of the Earth.  That's what this is... Without the kids.

Things I liked: Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician and the Phantom.  What's not to like?   They even brought in Lothar.

Things I didn't like: Flash is a little too far on the crazy side.

Vibe #4

Something about Gypsey and Vibe being together works.

Things I liked: Gypsey's powers are much cooler than I remember them... That's a bonus.  And Vibe's actually thinking.

Things I didn't like: where'd she get the money for trading?

Green Team #1

False advertising!  Deathstroke appeared nowhere in this book.

Things I liked: the car run by the internet was crazy fun.

Things I didn't like: I thought this was a story about teens using their fortune to get closer to heroes.  Instead he wants to use his fortune to become a superhero.

Tuesday, October 22, 2013

Green Lantern: New Guardians #20

Sappy!

Things I liked: it was a fitting epilogue.

Things I didn't like: I hope that a new creative team is in the works.  I hate Kyle's white Lantern getup.

Fury of Firestorm #20

Wrapped up in a rush.

Things I liked: the interplay between Jason and Ronnie was always the best part of this series.

Things I didn't like: they weren't given enough time to wrap things up.  It's very rushed.

Flash #20

This was appropriately dedicated to Carmine Infantino.  It was a classic Flash tale updated.

Things I liked: the wind tunnel.  Flash always loved the wind tunnel.  I always wondered what that did to his arms.

Things I didn't like: telling Patty to hide the evidence.  That's going to bite him later.

Sunday, October 20, 2013

Catwoman #20

I like it when Batman villains fight each other.

Things I liked: she's going to get herself in trouble.  I like that she doesn't know when to stop.

Things I didn't like: the Penguin stealing jewels to put on his mother's corpse.  That's a level of crazy that the Penguin doesn't have.

Batwoman #20

What exactly makes them think that Batwoman is capable of discovering Batman's secret identity?

Things I liked: they at least get on with it.  The plot moves forward at a good pace.

Things I didn't like: she's constantly being presented with ultimatums that she never comes through on.  They've got to call her on it soon.

Friday, October 18, 2013

Batman Incorporated #11

If this issue wasn't the second to last I'd probably stop reading.

Things I liked: nothing.  This one just wasn't good.

Things I didn't like: the story was dumb, Batman Japan and Canary were dumb and Lady Tiger Fist was especially dumb.

Thursday, October 17, 2013

Aquaman #20

Aquaman without Aquaman?  Not fair.

Things I liked: I do like the Others.  I'm interested in who they are and their dynamic.

Things I didn't like: feels like cheating the new 52.  They can't have their own book so they take over someone else's for a while.

Animal Man #20

Poor Buddy.

Things I liked: when superheroes do "real" this is the sort of thing I like.  Buddy was a stuntman, of course he'd still be doing movies.

Things I didn't like: slow year for movies?  I didn't think the story was that great.

All-Star Western #20

I've missed Jonah Hex.  And Booster too, but he's not a regular anymore.

Things I liked: Booster's discovery of his bullet proofing.

Things I didn't like: I liked Booster's amnesia while I read the issue, now I'm wondering about consistency.  There seems to be no problem going back in time for DC characters, going forward hasn't happened yet.  Booster trapped in the old west is a bad thing.

Nightwing #24

Bit of a morality play for Dick.  Fighting someone with the same reason for being.

Things I liked: Prankster actually had a reason behind his actions.

Things I didn't like: it's a good thing that the Crime Syndicate revealed his identity because he's been doing a poor job of keeping it secret.

Batman #24

Batman is doing this Forever Evil thing right, do Zero Year instead.

Things I liked: wow!  This one hit so many great points.  The costume with the gloves, the Detective #27 homage, the cave.  Everything.  I especially liked that they've kept the Joker's identity a mystery.

Things I didn't like: it was too big?  DC is just costing me money with all the great stuff they're putting out.

Batgirl #24

Barbara likes younger men.  I hadn't pegged Ricky as a 19 year old but there you go.  I hope she's still older than Nightwing, I've always liked that part about their relationship and she's had way too much life experience to still be 19 herself, plus I'm pretty sure we've seen her drinking.

Things I liked: the reaction to the shooting.  Everyone involved has a very real world feel to it.

Things I didn't like: she's so willing to give up Batgirl.  It feels contrived to me.

Batman Black and White #2

And there's yet another issue after this one!  I feel spoiled.

Things I liked: the art styles really captivate me.  I find this series is a long read becaue I really want to examine each panel.

Things I didn't like: wasn't that keen on Grampa's offering.  It didn't draw me in.

Thursday, October 10, 2013

Forever Evil #2

This is why Tim is my favorite ex-Robin.  He wants to go after Dick, but mostly because it might compromise the identities of everyone he knows.

Things I liked: Owlman's deal.  I don't know who the hooded guy is (I suspect Lex Luthor) but I like that Owlman stands up for Dick Grayson.

Things I didn't like: I don't think Geoff Johns knows how to write the Teen Titans.  Which is weird becaue I usually really like his stuff, but they didn't seem right.

Detective Comics #24

Doing the smart think here - tidying up the Wrath storyline and then heading straight into Zero Year.

Things I liked: Batman knows his allies as well as he knows his enemies.  I like that he "shared" the takedown with the police.

Things I didn't like: it felt rushed.  The narration was all in past tense but it hopped forward days.  I'm not sure where to place it.

Green Arrow #24

Whew!  Villain month is over and things can get back on track.

Things I liked: Diggle!  The TV show invades the comics.  He's a great character and I think he fits in this world.

Things I didn't like: my problem with universe wide events is that they often don't impact the universe.  Green Arrow is supposed to be dead.  I guess this could be happening just before Forever Evil, but in that case they should have let the titles finish their current arcs and then interrupted everything.

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

First Born #1

This read like a Greek myth.  And an origin story too.

Things I liked: I've wanted to know more of the first since he first appeared.  I know my Greek mythology pretty well so I thought I could place him.  This makes sense.

Things I didn't like: the hyena people were a little disturbing.

Man-Bat #1

Oddly, of all Batman's villains, Man-Bat is the one I'd expect to step up in a crisis.

Things I liked: symmetry.  I like when things go full circle, even if it's a little tragic.

Things I didn't like: that the bats can talk.  That doesn't make sense.

Sunday, October 6, 2013

Joker's Daughter #1

I have no idea who the Joker's Daughter is.  After reading this, I still don't know.

Things I liked: it's tough to introduce a new Batman character that'll stick.  This one may have potential.

Things I didn't like: what worked for the Ventriloquist didn't work here.  I've never seen this character before, I have no idea of her proclivities.  She could have told the truth with her story and I'd have no clue.

Thursday, October 3, 2013

Killer Croc #1

Killer Croc is a tough character to write.  You want to make him the main focus, but he's just not that bright.

Things I liked: what makes Croc Croc was interesting.  He failed more than he succeeded.

Things I didn't like: it was hard to get invested in the story.  He's still Killer Croc.

Bane #1

Meh.

Things I liked: Bane wasn't a mindless stooge.

Things I didn't like: never been a fan of Bane.  I liked Knightfall's but since then they've been trying to work him into the DC universe and he just doesn't fit.

Secret Society #1

This was so good!  Easily my favourite of the bunch.  It answered so many questions and raised some too.

Things I liked: Talon as a sidekick for Owlman makes more sense than Robin for Batman.  I liked that they brought the Court of Owls into the story.

Things I didn't like:  I'm still a little unsure if Thomas is Bruce's dad or if he's his brother.

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

Black Adam #1

Black Adam is a tough one.  He's supposed to be the opposite of everything Captain Marvel, but lately there's been more layers added to the character.  He's almost sympathetic.  He rules a country now, absolutely, but he's not quite a dictator.

Things I liked: nice to see him resurrected.  I thought they killed him too soon after reinventing Shazam.

Things I didn't like: maybe it's just the post-resurrection loopiness, but he didn't seem to be with it.  He's a bundle of rage and that's a step down for this character.

Tuesday, October 1, 2013

Batman Black and White #1

There's more than one of these?  I'm so excited!

Things I liked: black and white art forces the artist to rely on the purity of the line and the subtly of the shading to convey the idea.  The art in this book is amazing.  From a look back at the Sprag style, to the legend that is Neil Adams every story in this collection was beautiful to look at.  They were also very good stories.  I hope the next issue lives up to this standard.

Things I didn't like: the reminder that they're not choosing to draw Harley with the whimsy she deserves.

Dial E #1

I was disappointed with this one.  All the other villain month issues I read did something, this was an excuse for throwing out a list of terrible superhero code names.

Things I liked: the cover was very cool.

Things I didn't like: no story, no consistency.  No point.

Monday, September 30, 2013

Dial 'H' for Hero #15

A fairly satisfying end to the series.  I would've liked to have seen more but I knew the series was destined to come to a logical conclusion.

Things I liked: the dial mythology is very interesting.  The heroes were always terrible but the story was good.

Things I didn't like: how calmly Roxie and Nelson are reacting to being stuck in another world.

Dial 'H' for Hero #14

I was right, they didn't stick around long.

Things I liked: Nelson isn't so nebbish now.

Things I didn't like: a lot of the action took place off screen.  It feels rushed now.

Sunday, September 29, 2013

Dial 'H' for Hero #13

I think Open Window Man is dumb, but he's not stupid.

Things I liked: the dial mythology is very interesting.  I like how they're piecing together worlds.

Things I didn't like: I want to know more about the other dialers but I don't think we'll get the chance.

Thursday, September 26, 2013

Penguin #1

The Penguin has probably been the most improved villain in the new 52.  He actually seems competent now.

Things I liked: the Penguin is evil.  Not like the Joker, in a much less comic book way.

Things I didn't like: I wish they hadn't tried to draw vomit.

Ra's al Ghul and the League of Assassins #1

Ra's does seem the most likely to stand Gainst the Secret Soceity of Supervillains.

Things I liked: that nobody can tell him what to do.  That's the sort respect a villain like him demands.

Things I didn't like: he had to be there for the start of World War I?

Scarecrow #1

Scarecrow as the mastermind is so etching that I feel they picked up from the Nolan Batman movies.  It doesn't not fit.

Things I liked: this one tried to tell what was actually going on during villains' month.

Things I didn't like: it seems to have ignored most of the stuff I've actually read.

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

Clayface #1

This is a departure from all the Batman villains.  Most of those have been trying to show just how crazy these people are.  Clayface isn't crazy, though he is very small.

Things I liked: I almost feel sorry for Clayface.  He wants to be so much more than he is.

Things I didn't like: so if the Secret Soceity is so powerful, why doesn't it know where all the superheroes are?  Seems like a convoluted plan that Clayface broke up.

Shadow Thief #1

I don't know who Shadow Theif is.  There aren't too many DC characters that I don't know so it's odd when I run across one.  I think this is a case of gender switching.  The shadow character I know that works like this is male.

Things I liked: kinda interesting story.  There's a lot of background here.  She doesn't seem quite a villain though.  Unless spies are just actomatically villainous, but that doesn't explain James Bond.

Sunday, September 22, 2013

Riddler #1

I didn't think I'd enjoy this one.  It's hard to make the Riddler anything but a joke.

Things I liked: he came across as actually crazy in this issue.  Not just obsessed with riddles but with other issues as well.

Things I didn't like: the last two riddles don't make sense to me.  I get who they're referring to, but they don't work as riddles.

Court of Owls #1

I like the Court of Owls.  They're a great villain, but I don't think they're a premiere villain.  They're crazy, but not Joker crazy.

Things I liked: trying to give an overview of the long history of the Court.  They're really trying to stick this group into Gotham's history.

Things I didn't like: it just wasn't a good story.  It jumped around too much and tried to focus on too any different aspects of the Court.

Mr. Freeze #1

The definitive creepy Mr. Freeze was already done in one of the annuals so this feels like a retread of sorts.

Things I liked: they remembered that they'd just given him a new origin and didn't try to do it again.

Things I didn't like: it didn't make sense.  I get the mommy issues, but why would he want to be the head of a whole new family?

Thursday, September 19, 2013

Harley Quinn #1

Not a fan of the new 52 Harley.  She's too sexualized.  This story wasn't bad though.

Things I liked: it gave Harley purpose again.  She's not there to be used.  She's nor a sex toy.  She made decisions that seemed rational at the time.

Things I didn't like: I hate her costume.  Mostly the top.  I can look past the short shorts and long socks but the bustier kills me every time.

Lobo #1

Interesting... Lobo's not Lobo.  Huh.  I can see where some people are upset.

Things I liked: actually I kind of like that concept.  I was never a big fan of Lobo.  This guy seems much more calm and collected.  Much more like he was before Simon Bisley got a hold of him.

Things I didn't like: I liked this issue quite a bit.  It was tight.

Killer Frost #1

I'm not that familiar with Killer Frost, but I did enjoy this one.

Things I liked: she's another villain that's not so bad.  She is a murderer, but not on purpose, and she's more connected to Firestorm than I thought.

Things I didn't like: Caitlyn Snow is such a 90s name.

Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Trigon #1

There's something right about Marv Wolfman writing Teen Titans.  I almost hate to say something bad about it.

Things I liked: seeing Marv Wolfman give a background to one of his biggest villains.

Things I didn't like: unfortunately, it wasn't the best background.  It's too bad, really, but Trigon sucking the evil out of something that sucked out evil was lame.

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

Forever Evil #1

I'm pretty sure that the Justice League weren't quite dead at the end of Trinity War, so where are they?

Things I liked: Nightwing is a good choice for the Crime Syndicate to use to get to everybody.  He knows everyone and they all like him.

Things I didn't like: they revealed him as Richard Grayson, that means that eventually this will all have been a dream or something so that things will be normal again.  It won't have an effect on the DC Universe for the future.

Joker #1

I was really hoping this would be Scott Snyder.  It wasn't and I'm a little disappointed.

Things I liked: it was suitably crazy for the Joker.  They've still kept his identity secret but added in this child a use last that makes sense.

Things I didn't like: the ape was too smart.  I can see the a joker wanting something like this and even getting a gorilla to try it, but unless this story was told through the lens of his insanity it went too far.  DC loves apes so maybe it was even a super intelligent one, but why find it in the zoo?

Monday, September 16, 2013

Poison Ivy #1

I almost feel sorry for her.  Her past doesn't excuse her present though.

Things I liked: I like getting inside her head.

Things I didn't like: I'm not sure.  This was a solid issue.

Two-Face #1

It's too bad they couldn't make this start with issue #2.

Things I liked: I've always liked Two-Face as a villain.  He's a very interesting psychopath.

Things I didn't like: the story faltered right near the end.  It was going along well and then lost the way.

Darkseid #1

I don't know the origin of Darkseid so I can't say how this stacks up.  I have a suspicion that this is the only origin of Darkseid.

Things I liked: gave a reason for him to be a new god.  I always thought that was weird.

Things I didn't like: that his main purpose is destruction.  That's going to be a problem for him at some point.

Sunday, September 15, 2013

Count Vertigo #1

This is a very similar story to Deadshot's and yet I don't feel the same sympathy.  Vertigo is a much nastier villain.

Things I liked: they're trying so hard to give him a reason to be royalty with a chip on his shoulder.

Things I didn't like: I'm pretty sure Calgary doesn't have brothels.

Deadshot #1

I'm actually feeling empathy for Deadshot.  Weird.

Things I liked: nice work on why he uses one bullet.  Gotham knows how to make a villain.

Things I didn't like: Deadshot has never been a favourite of mine.  It's still nice to see the exposure for him though.  I think he has potential.

Ventriloquist #1

I'm a little confused.  I haven't read anything about the Justice League being dead, or where this Villains month is coming from.  This was a creepy issue anyway.

Things I liked: Gotham produces the oddest villains.

Things I didn't like: I think this is supposed to be Batgirl, not the Dark Knight.

Batman: the Dark Knight #23

How can it be almost good every time?

Things I liked: at least Clayface didn't develop psychic powers.  The Penguin telling him made much more sense.

Things I didn't like: Clayface has a very poor plan.  Worse than usual for him.

Thursday, September 12, 2013

Justice League #23

The Secret Society, huh?  And from Earth 3?  They can't get away from multiple earths.  They tried and now they're all back again.

Things I liked: it's a good intro to villains month.  All those covers I've been seeing make sense now.

Things I didn't like: Phantom Stranger, dead.  Cyborg stripped of his cybernetics.  Superman with a sliver of kryptonite in his brain.  But mostly the Atom being evil.  It wasn't that long ago she was moaning because she was a double agent, but now it was all a game?  Why bother with thinking about how she didn't want to screw people over when it was the only thing she wanted to do.

Justice League Dark #23

Whew!  That was a big fight.

Things I liked:Constantine being able to hold the box because he's already corrupted.

Things I didn't like: there's just too many characters here for any of them to really get any time.  It's almost hard to keep track because they did try to show everybody.

Teen Titans #23

I miss Wally West.  The more they do with Bar Tor the more I miss Wally.

Things I liked: seeing them out of costume.  They feel more like whole people.

Things I didn't like: Beast Boy and Bunker leaving.  Hopefully it's only temporary because I do like these characters.

Monday, September 9, 2013

Batman and Robin #23

I've been expecting Nightwing for a while.  I wasn't disappointed.  Although, no fair DC, too many tears this month.

Things I liked: the easy relationship that Bruce and Dick have.  It's not always there but when it is it feels right.  The bit with Alfred was just perfect.

Things I didn't like: getting here has taken too long.

Sunday, September 8, 2013

Red Hood and the Outlaws #23

Kori really is the reasonable one here.  No matter how she dresses.

Things I liked: they've really move away from "slutty Starfire".  Plus, Cheshire and Roy make a cute couple.

Things I didn't like: Roy was very pigheaded.

Wonder Woman #23

Hades is right - Diana will make an interesting God of War.

Things I liked: they won me over.  I wasn't sure where they were going with this storyline but I'm pleased with the resolution.  It made me tear up when she killed War.  And I hadn't even liked him.

Things I didn't like: I don't like the goddess stories with Diana, but I'm willing to give them a chance.

Saturday, September 7, 2013

Nightwing #23

This is one of those issues where they're forced to move the pieces into place.

Things I liked: Nightwing's very chatty.  Higgins even managed to get a Holy X in there.

Things I didn't like: seemed a little too far into the action.  The last issue a train blew up and here he's trying to rescue a girl from a ledge.

Batman #23

There are certain moments in Batman's origin that work best without words.  Snyder knows which ones those are.

Things I liked: contrasting Bruce's beat down by the Red Hood gang with his discovery of the Batcave as a boy.  The lack of dialogue adds nicely to that.

Things I didn't like: tying the Joker to the death of the Waynes.  Even just a little.  I agree with the Red Hood - the tragedy of Martha and Thomas is that it was completely random.

The back up story was also very good.  Batman has a line that he doesn't cross and I think that's to be respected.

Batgirl #23

I can only envision this arc to end with Commissioner Gordon knowing that his daughter is Batgirl.

Things I liked: Gordon's partner is showing signs of intelligence.  She was originally willing to finger Batgirl for anything, now she's playing the caution card.

Things I didn't like: Barbara is being careless with her identity.

Thursday, September 5, 2013

Justice League of America #7

I thought by reading Justice League Dark that I wouldn't miss anything from this crossover.  Guess I should've read the Phantom Stranger as well.

Things I liked: it's all falling apart for Waller.  Hopefully the whole thing between the two leagues will be dropped.

Things I didn't like: issuing bits of the story.  I wanted to hear what Light had to say, but I don't want to buy the Phantom Stranger as well.

Monday, September 2, 2013

Justice League Dark #22

This is why I dislike crossovers.  It's not so bad when I read all the titles that are involved, but I stopped reading Justice League Dark because it was uninteresting.

Things I liked: Wonder Woman is all kick ass here.  She just wants to kick ass and chew bubblegum.  She's all out of bubblegum.

Things I didn't like: everyone squaring off.  I know they'll all be on the same side in the end.  The teams are arbitrary at best.  At least Cyborg's team is pretty much just made up of the leftovers.

Green Arrow #23

Green Arrow is a hero for the 21st century now.  I stopped reading before because it seemed too dated.  I'm really enjoying this team.

Things I liked: the art is amazing this issue.  I love the way the flashbacks were constructed.  S much movement.

Things I didn't like: Arrow gets off easy on the killing thing.  The TV show acknowledges that arrows are deadly, here they try to avoid him making the kill shot.

Sunday, September 1, 2013

Detective Comics #23

Layman may become another of my favorites.  Actual detecting in Detective Comics.

Things I liked: when Batman uses Bruce to find things out.  This is why he has a secret identity.

Things I didn't like: Alfred was playing it a little fast and loose.

Thursday, August 29, 2013

Batman Annual #2

Is it wrong that I want to see more of Eric?  I think he'd be a good addition to the Batman supporting cast.

Things I liked: very cool idea.  The Asylum is something closely associated with Batman that doesn't always get the treatment it deserves.

Things I didn't like: nothing.  Once again Snyder comes through with a tight story.

Detective Comics Annual #2

This was such a good story.  I loved the whole thing.

Things I liked: I love it when Batman actually earns that "World's Greatest Detective" moniker.  And Harvey gets some good face time here as well.

Things I didn't liked: I didn't like Jane Doe when she was initially introduced.  I'm still not a fan, but this worked.

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

Red Hood and the Outlaws #22

This is what happens when you let a story develop.

Things I liked: no fight this issue, it's putting all the pieces in place for the story first.

Things I didn't like: Cheshire seems a little off.  I do like her Roy "thing" though.

Teen Titans #22

I really wish they'd given this stories more pages to finish.  There's too many holes.

Things I liked: Beast Boy is back to the way I remember him, but what happened to all the moodiness he shed like a dirty shirt?

Things I didn't like: the story could have been epic if given a couple of more issues to put everything in place, as it is, it feels rushed.  One shouldn't rush Trigon.

Batman: the Dark Knight #22

Why do I keep reading this one?  It's always terrible.

Things I liked: nice bit with Alfred.

Things I didn't like: Clayface turned into the girlfriend and the big question is how did he know she was connected to Batman.  It could be that she was killed by the Bat Signal but I suspect that they're going to give Clayface limited telepathy.

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

Batman and Robin #22

Now with Catwoman.  I'd like to think she called him in because she knows he's broken.

Things I liked: it's still weird to see Batman smile but I liked the reason he was.  Batman and children seem to be a good thing for him.  The fight scene was also very well done from an art perspective.

Things I didn't like: this whole thing with Carrie Kelly.  I don't know what Alfred's thinking, nor what Bruce is planning.  At some point he has to let the world know that Damian is dead.  That's not something that can be hidden for long.  I still expect him back at some point.  He is an al'Ghul.

Wonder Woman #22

I wish they'd spent more time on New Genesis, that was interesting.

Things I liked: Orion was great this issue, he's really forming into an intriguing character.

Things I didn't like: Wonder Woman does a whole lot of vowing to get back at people.  I don't recall vengeance being a big part of her philosophy.  It's becoming kind of a one note thing with her.

Monday, August 26, 2013

Justice League of America #6

There's a lot of lead up in this story, it really doesn't go anywhere until the end.

Things I liked: Diana's confidence.  This is why she's part of the big three.

Things I didn't like: the Question.  I don't like that's he's part of the trinity with the Phantom Stranger and Pandora.  He works better without the mystical influence.

Nightwing #22

The opening monologue sets the tone of this issue so well.  It's very much how I expect Dickmto look at his work.  He's still a performer at heart.

Things I liked: the art where he explodes into action is great.  It has a sense of movement that's often missed in comics.

Things I didn't like: Dick's very Spider-Man pose with the mayor.  It's not that I think he can't do that, it's just become known with someone else.

Sunday, August 25, 2013

Batman #22

Everyone wants a chance to write Batman's first year.

Things I liked: I admit it, I was pretty sure that Uncle Phillip was planning to kill Bruce.  You got me this time Snyder.

Things I didn't like: it was too short.  I'm loving this story.

Batgirl #22

Batgirl goes on a date!

Things I liked: Batman must have let Gordon hit him.  He's a great friend.  I think Barbara needs a visit from Dick.

Things I didn't like: I don't get why Commissioner Gordon is so set against Batgirl.  She's never shown that she would kill purposefully, why now with his son.

Saturday, August 24, 2013

Justice League #22

Normally I hate crossovers, especially if I don't read one of the titles.  This cover thing has me intrigued.

Things I liked: good intro with Madame Xanadu.  It's expository without being dull.

Things I didn't like: introducing Dr. Light just to kill him.

Detective Comics #22

Detecting in Detective Comics, who da thunk.

Things I liked: sure, I knew who the bad guy was fairly quickly, but I like that they're trying something new.

Things I didn't like: as someone with a science background, especially in biology and chemistry, watching Kirk Langstrom pour his formula down the sink hurt me deeply.

Friday, August 23, 2013

Green Arrow #22

Count Vertigo looks like he might be cool in the new 52.

Things I liked: it's really coming together, I feel like there's an actual plot happening here.

Things I didn't like: this was a strong issue.  I can't think of something I didn't like.

Tuesday, August 20, 2013

Teen Titans #21

They're trying to tell too big a story in too few pages.

Things I liked: some good quips, some nice teamwork.  Too bad it all fell flat.

Things I didn't like: the pace of this story's all wrong.  It has no rhythm.

Justice League of America #5

And so much better than the parent book.

Things I liked: team building.  These people are learning to work together.

Things I didn't like: gearing up for a multiple series crossover.  I hate those.

Justice League #21

I read the Justice League for the Justice League, not for Captain Marvel.

Things I liked: at least it was a good story.  I liked that Billy used wisdom to defeat Black Adam.

Things I didn't like: the whole Marvel family is back.  I don't mind Mary and Freddy, it's everyone else that's a pain.

Friday, August 16, 2013

Batman the Dark Knight

And then there's the difference between how two titles deal with grief...  Dark Knight doesn't even mention Damian, but the loss of lady love sends Batman on a rampage.

Things I liked: at least they're trying to make the Mad Hatter cool.

Things I didn't like: Batman has grown since Jason's death, why not acknowledge it?

Thursday, August 8, 2013

Batman and Robin #21

And Batgirl offers to be his Robin.  At least someone notices he's gone off the deep end.

Things I liked: this is the Batman I remember from Jason's death.  At least one title is acknowledging the emotional toll he's going through.

Things I didn't like: they forgot how to draw Damian's costume.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #21

I don't know how I feel about all the supernatural stuff that's been going on here lately.  I liked it better when it was aliens.

Things I liked: seeing most of DC's assassins I one place.

Things I didn't like: Roy's slipping again.  He's turning into a one note character.

Wonder Woman #21

Orion is a good addition to the Wonder Woman pantheon.  It makes sense in a way.

Things I liked: Orion's complete confidence in himself.  Nothing phases him.

Things I didn't like: still can't figure out who this First Born is.  It should be Hephaestus, but it isn't.

Sunday, August 4, 2013

Worlds' Finest #12

I thought they were already underground.

Things I liked: I knew I recognized Kevin Maguire.  Looks like he's managed to learn to draw more than butts.

Things I didn't like: Desaad seems out of place here.  He's much creepier than I'm used to (which I like) but I don't like that he's separate from Darkseid.

Saturday, August 3, 2013

Threshold #5

I'm not quite sure where they're going with this story.  It seems kind of all over the place.

Things I liked: nice to see him pull out the Green Lantern.  Can't have a character that says he is but does nothing with it.

Things I didn't like: please, please.  Let this be the end of Larfleeze.

Saturday, July 20, 2013

Superboy #20

This looks like the start of a classic Teen Titans storyline, which is why I'm a little disappointed that it's in Superboy.

Things I liked: banter is always fun.

Things I didn't like: I know Superboy has his own villains, why aren't they being used?

Thursday, July 18, 2013

Green Lantern Corps #20

Guy's almost human.  Things have changed.

Things I liked: a nice slow story.  Good counterpoint to the nonstop action that was the third war.

Things I didn't like: actually a pretty solid issue.  I liked seeing the non-Lantern Guy.

Demon Knights #20

This title is beginning to move into Stormwatch territory.  I like it... But do I like it enough.

Things I liked: Exoristos had the spotlight this issue.  She's been more sure of herself here than she has been for a while.

Things I didn't like: that the Shining Knight's gender has been revealed.  It was better when guessed about, or known but unacknowledged.

Constantine #3

Poor John, he's got it hard.  I think most of it is his own fault though.

Things I liked: London was spectacularly spooky.  It was almost a Vertigo comic of old.

Things I didn't like: tidied up a little too well.  Things shouldn't go that we'll for Constantine.

Arrow #36

I should feel bad that Laurel's not talking to him... But I don't.

Things I liked: nice set up for season 2.

Things I didn't like: the art kind of swung around wildly.

Nightwing #21

I'm really enjoying the direction that these guys are taking Nightwing.

Things I liked: not every decision is an easy one.  Gotham has been very black or white for Dick.  Chicago; not so much.

Things I didn't like: he's treading awfully close to losing his secret identity.

Batman #21

Batman: Year One - what every comic writer aspires to.  At least Snyder has an excuse with it being the reselling of the origin in the new 52.

Things I liked: all the elements are there, but they're not fully formed yet.  This story picks up where the zero issue left off.

Things I didn't like: I hope he gets better at keeping secrets, because he's decided to stay dead all of 2 seconds before his uncle shows up to take him out.

Saturday, June 15, 2013

Superman Unchained #1

I don't likeSuperman.  He's just got too much of everything, but I do like Scott Snyder and Jim Lee so I was torn.

Things I liked: I do like what a good writer can do with Superman, and Snyder is a good writer.  The catching of the satellite upped the ante on terrific things Superman has done.

Things I didn't like: so the atomic bomb wasn't a bomb, eh?

Batgirl #21

The thing I like most about Gail Simone is that she makes the extraordinary real.  For example...

Things I liked: Nightwing calls Barbara to offer his condolences.  Sure, they're both bat-themed heroes but they're also friends, former lovers, and have both just lost someone they cared about.  It makes sense that he would call.  Just like she told him about Damian.

Things I didn't like: how hellbent Jim is to get the person who killed his son.  I'm used to him knowing, or at least suspecting, that Batgirl is his daughter.

Thursday, June 13, 2013

Swamp Thing #20

Bad things happen in Metropolis.  Especially when Batman villains show up.

Things I liked: they try really hard to keep Holland human.  It makes sense that losing that part of himself would be his greatest fear.

Things I didn't like: Superman telling him to stay out of Metropolis.  Superman usually isn't that territorial.

Tuesday, June 11, 2013

The Movement #1

I like Gail Simone but I'm not sure what I think of this.  It took more than half of the book to really get into it and I'm not sure if its because its not my thing, or because I just read Green Lantern.

Things I liked: citizens rising up against corruption is a theme I can get behind.

Things I didn't like: taking over half the city is not.  Especially when they go after the good ones too.

Green Lantern #20

This was nothing short of amazing.

Things I liked: this hit all the right notes.  It was the legend of Hal Jordan - always my favourite Lantern. It made me cry, it made me laugh, it made me think.  It was an excellent ending to nearly a decade of storytelling.

Things I didn't like: it's over.  I don't know how the series can continue with something like this that perfectly encapsulates what it means to be Green Lantern.

Earth 2 #12

I love how young Jay is.  It's like having Wally back.

Things I liked: Khalid really owned his Fate.

Things I didn't like: Sam's murder.  Something seems off there.

Dial 'H' for Hero #12

That was... Weird.

Things I liked: that there's a whole slew of dials.

Things I didn't like: that there's a whole slew of dials. It's both very cool and very dumb.  The names are terrible and now that we know they're stealing powers from real heroes it seems wrong they there's a group that knows what's going on and will still participate.

Arrow #35

This was one of the best Arrows in weeks!

Things I liked: it's expanding what happened in the show.  I like when they do that.

Things I didn't like: I still don't like that Tommy died.  I don't like Laurel and Oliver together.  Looks like he might have survivor's guilt though.  Not surprising.

Green Arrow #21

I think they've taken everything they can from him, now to build him back up.

Things I liked: the new team has taken its time to establish where they want to take this character.

Things I didn't like: that's an awful lot of secret societies.

Thursday, June 6, 2013

Detective Comics #21

Ra's al Ghul!  I recognize that beard anywhere.

Things I liked: his rage seems to have boiled down.  He's not as reckless as he first was after Damian's death.

Things I didn't like: I don't want Harper Row to be the new Robin.  I want Damian back.  Ra's appearance makes that seem more likely.

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

DC Universe Presents #19

I liked Beowulf, not that pleased that he was chosen to close out this series.

Things I liked: Beowulf is an interesting character.  From a dark future that's gone fantasy.

Things I didn't like: it felt rushed.  I would have liked more background on why he and the Puca were so interested in this era.

Arrow #34

Ah, so that's where he got the plane.

Things I liked: nice series of panels showing the awkwardness of piloting for a vigilante.

Things I didn't like: this one was actually pretty tight.  Nothing leaps out at me.

Red Hood and the Outlaws Annal #1

I've been waiting for this one.  Finally, why Roy and Ollie had their falling out.

Things I liked: Roy's been so much more mature lately, he's slowly been stealing the spotlight from Jason.

Things I didn't like: the Roy-bots were a little over the top.  Silly and unlikely.

Monday, June 3, 2013

Justice League of America #4

Waller is still not a nice person.

Things I liked: Stargirl has moxy.  I'm glad she didn't follow orders.

Things I didn't like: exactly how powerful is Martian Manhunter supposed to be?  It seems to vary widely.

Batman the Dark Knight Annual #1

This was so good!  Unfortunately, my first thought was, "Why can't the monthly title be this good?"

Things I liked: great mood set by the art.  The story went right where it was expected, even the villains knew what was happening, but it was still good.

Things I didn't like: setting it at Halloween.  It's the wrong time of year for this kind of story.

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

Talon #7

Looks like the one live Talon isn't so much anymore.

Things I liked: Batman!  Yeah, he is kinda set up here but in Gotham he needed to show up.

Things I didn't like: making Haley's Circus the recruiting area for the Court makes me wonder how Dick didn't know.  He and Calvin are about the same age, they should know one another.

Superman #19

I love Orion.  I hope his gets his own series somewhere.

Things I liked: Hector Hammond is an interesting foe for Superman.  He's all about what he can do with his mind and most of Superman's enemies really focus on being ophysically powerful.

Things I didn't like: I shall curse Superman forever for bringing back Diana Prince.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #19

So everybody's almost in the right spots.

Things I liked: Sinestro just grabbing Kyle's ring and not caring that he wouldn't be able to breath.  Pure Sinestro.

Things I didn't like: Kyle's new mask looks dumb.

Green Lantern #19

The First Lantern is much too powerful.

Things I liked: it's almost over?  I've not been enjoying this arc.  Apparently the payoff is all next issue.

Things I didn't like: he destroyed the whole planet.

Fury of Firestorm #19

Ronnie's mom can take a lot of punishment.

Things I  liked: pretty big battle, it moved well from villain to villain.

Things I didn't like: seems like they tried to get all of Firestorm's villains into the last two issues for no good reason.

Flash #19

Barry is pretty competent as himself.

Things I liked: Barry's can do attitude.  He didn't waste time worrying about his powers until the crisis was over.

Things I didn't like: the new look of the Reverse Flash.

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

Batman Incorporated #10

When Jason died Batman went into a rage.  His vengeance was let loose.  This is over the top.

Things I liked: not my favourite issue.  This is just too far, even for Batman.

Things I didn't like: the Azrael armor, the bat suit and the bat venom.  Individually it would be over the top, all together the top can't even be seen.

Arrow #33

A look into what makes Roy tick.

Things I like: Roy could be an interesting character.  I'm curious what they plan to do with him.

Things I didn't like: Roy has terrible friends.

Aquaman #19

Mera has another man in her life?Arthur will be so disappointed.

Things I liked: Arthur is very much a man of two worlds.

Things I didn't like: the plan to free Orm.  I don't see this going well at all.

Sunday, May 26, 2013

All Star Western #19

Booster Gold!  So nice to see him back.

Things I liked: Jonah hates all people equally.

Things I didn't like: they don't quite have Booster's personality down.  Maybe it's a time thing.

Justice League #20

I kinda like Element Woman.  I hope she sticks around.

Things I liked: Batman and Superman's conversation was great.  I do wonder what was in Batman's box though.  Especially if Superman needed it to take him down.  What's Batman's kryptonite?

Things I didn't like: Amanda Waller has gone too far.  I hope the whole things comes crashing down around her.

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

Teen Titans #20

I feel like I'm missing something.  I think I said this last month too, but there seems to be pages missing.

Things I liked: nice to see the whole gang, just missing Cyborg.

Things I didn't like: why are they trusting Raven again?  And where does Beast Boy fit in?

Batman: the Dark Knight #20

Yep.  Dating the Batman is a bad idea.

Things I liked: this was all very predictable.  If it had been a lead to the Batman movie where he quits it might have made sense.  But not so much here.

Things I didn't like: into the Bat Signal?  Really?  Excellent aim the Mad Hatter has.

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Sword of Sorcery #7

Apparently, Nilaa has not had to face any kind of significant threat for some time.  Eclipso sort of walked all over them.

Things I liked: it looks like the final issue is going to be epic.

Things I didn't like: oh, Stalker has a demon child.  How original.

Supergirl #19

I was wondering what a meeting between Supergirl and Power Girl would be like.

Things I liked: Power Girl gets her costume back!

Things I didn't like: if one gets sick the other gets sick.  That doesn't make sense in the scheme of dimension travel.

Monday, May 20, 2013

Vibe #3

Ah, the superhero team up phase of a new comic.

Things I liked: his humanity towards Kid Flash.  It's getting him in trouble with Waller, but it's what makes him a likable character.

Things I didn't like: he seems too powerful.  He can just turn the speedsters off?

Catwoman #19

Stark contrast between Batwoman and Catwoman.

Things I liked: her attitude towards authority is fun to watch.

Things I didn't like: she doesn't belong in Arkham.  There's another prison in Gotham that she is suited to.

Batwoman #19

New story arc!  These always feel like a whole new novel.  This team works big.

Things I liked: lots of little threads that I can't wait to see how they turn out.

Things I didn't like: they created a character that they've tried to make utterly unlikable and then they try to give her redeeming qualities.  It may be too late.

Arrow #32

Ah, Nanda Parbat.  The go to place for martial arts in the DCU.

Things I liked: it does explain the kick assness of Malcolm.

Things I didn't like: nobody noticed his vigilante acts before Ollie showed up?  Or is Starling City that corrupt that no one notices gang bangers showing up with arrows sticking out of them?

Nightwing #20

The Prankster is a good foil for Dick.  It's nice to see him shine in his own series for a change.

Things I liked: Dick with roommates.  I expect Three's Company level farce though.

Things I didn't like: the Prankster seems to have upped his schick much higher than one would expect.

Sunday, May 19, 2013

Red Hood and the Outlaws #20

Jason is dumb.  I get that he's been burned by Batman but having all his memories released is dumb.  Even for Jason.

Things I liked: their history in the new 52 is being fleshed out.  I want to know what Kori's hiding.

Things I didn't like: the whole memory erasing thing.  It seems out of character to me.  Jason's always been a kind of head on guy.

Saturday, May 18, 2013

Batgirl #20

A new Ventriloquist, eh?  I really liked the old one though.

Things I liked: things that happen actually affect Barbara, both in her costumed identity and in her civilian one.

Things I didn't like: that Commissioner Gordon is so ready to blame Batgirl for his son's death.  I would think he's be leaning towards it being a terrible accident.  Knowing the reputations of both Batgirl and James.

Friday, May 17, 2013

Wonder Woman #20

I have a feeling that when the First shows up there's going to be some reordering of who opposes whom.

Things I liked: I've been playing Injustice all night so I may be biased, but there were some pretty epic fights this issue.

Things I didn't like: I still don't know who the first is supposed to be.

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Threshold #4

Yay!  Brainiac!

Things I liked: the rabbit, the slug and Jediah against Brainiac has much potential.

Things I didn't like: what's so great about Larfleeze?

Superboy #19

Harvest's plan is still so much more complicated Han it really needs to be.

Things I liked: I'm curious where they're going with this.  This seems to be a radical departure from he story they had been telling.

Things I didn't like: so Superboy is the clone of The child of Superman and Lois Lane with a smidgen of Harvest?  Or he's the clone of the combined DNA of Superman, Lois and Harvest.  They kind of lost me.

Monday, May 13, 2013

Ravagers #11

While I admit this series never quite worked I don't think they need to kill everybody.

Things I liked: Gar and Terra have a great relationship.

Things I didn't like: it doesn't make sense to vaporize these guys.

Green Lantern Corps #19

Mogo is a lot more powerful than I thought he was.

Things I liked: the end of the Wrath of the First Lantern is almost over!

Things I didn't like: Mogo is too much.  It's dues ex machina time.

Sunday, May 12, 2013

Demon Knights #19

Well, Cain's army seemed to be easily dispatched.

Things I liked: Lucifer ordering Jason back.  He's got the fear.

Things I didn't like: it happened so fat.  The Demon is strong but he ain't been able to take out armies before.

Constantine #2

I quite liked this one.  He wasn't quite as big a dick.

Things I liked: he's very aware of where he fits in the grand scheme of things and he doesn't try to deny where he knows he'll end up.

Things I didn't like: I don't quite understand what the Order of Cold, or whatever they're calling themselves, are up to.

Arrow #31

I know it's hard to come up with a new storyline every week, but I'm pretty sure they just did this one.

Things I liked: the kid's reaction of the vigilante, it's simplistic enough that it rings true.

Things I didn't like: the mook survived.  Ollie has shown time and again he shoots the mook first.

Batman #20

I'm really enjoying the Batman/Superman back up feature.

Things I liked: Clayface did Batman a solid in the who secret identity thing.

Things I didn't like: the inconsistencies in how he's dealing with Damian's death across series.  He seems more at peace here than in Batman and Robin.

Saturday, May 11, 2013

Batman and Robin #20

Really, Batman and Red Hood.

Tim would have stopped him.  Dick wouldn't have gone.  Bruce knows his Robins.  Not as well as he thinks he does.

Things I liked: Jason came out of this very nicely.  He looks like a hero.  He looks like a good son.  And, most important, he gets to give it to Bruce.

Things I didn't like: Bruce didn't say the one thing he really needed to.  He didn't say he was sorry.  Sorry that he didn't make the effort for Jason that he's making for Damian.

Justice League of America #3

Still learning the ropes.  I like that.

Things I liked: I could really learn to like this Hawkman.

Things I didn't like: not sure what the point of having Stargirl on the team if they're not going to let her out to play.

Wednesday, May 8, 2013

Worlds' Finest #11

I'm glad they're keeping some of the stuff from Mr. Terrific. I didn't like the series but it retains continuity.

Things I liked: tee hee, only Lucius and Dick think about parallel universes.

Things I didn't like: Huntress is a little too competent. She needs some kind if weekness.

Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Swamp Thing #19

This was a good look into what it means to be an avatar of the Green. Alec seems to be having a better go of it than Buddy.

Things I liked: Alec's descriptions of the plants. They were funny and I could picture what he was getting at.

Things I didn't like: Scarecrow in Metropolis seems unfair.

Superboy #18

Looks like Superboy's finally going to find out who his human parent is.

Things I liked: unlike the First Lantern story, showing Superboy's mindscape is much less painful.

Things I didn't like: I hope he talks to Bunker about turning himself in, that seems a bad idea.

Ravagers #10

Deathstroke killed a little boy?!

Things I liked: Gar and Terra continue to be good together.

Things I didn't like: it feels really rushed. I know the series has been canceled. It feels like they're trying to fit everything in.

Green Lantern Corps #18

Ugh. When is this story over.

Things I liked: nice little history lesson in John. I didn't know most if that.

Things I didn't like: art was bad. They didn't look like them at all.

Earth 2 #11

So much happening this issue Dr. Fate and Mister Miracle.

Things I liked: how much faith everyone has in Jay. It grounds the series.

Things I didn't like: cross dressing Wotan.

Dial 'H' for Hero #11

This is a really interesting concept. Dialing up heroes with terrible names was one thing, but they can steal powers from heroes that are known? That's a whole new level.

Things I liked: really conveyed how fast the Flash can be. Drawing the power out of others makes so much sense when it comes to how the dials work.

Things I didn't like: is French, it didn't need a little translation note.

Monday, May 6, 2013

Arrow #30

Y'know, I'm pretty sure it doesn't work that way.

Things I liked: it's nice to see Ollie off his list, but this wasn't really where I'd expect him to go.

Things I liked: carriers are still symptomatic.

Animal Man #19

This feels real. I've read a lot of stories where they try to see how heroes would act in the real world. This one felt the most real.

Things I liked: the emotions. The emotions were all so raw.

Things I didn't like: Maxine is too old for her years.

Sunday, May 5, 2013

Detective Comics #20

Yay! Emperor Penguin is done.

Things I liked: as much as I hate Emperor Penguin, the image of him hanging Batman from the tree was very powerful.

Things I didn't like: his whole plan. It doesn't work like that... Ever. The who,e Emperor Blackgate thing just shows more of his stupidity.

Saturday, May 4, 2013

Green Arrow #20

Nicely done. Stories that start at the end can be hard to pull off.

Things I liked: dramatic tension was used very effectively here. Ollie took off the gloves and it felt right.

Things I didn't like: he's building a group again. I like him on his own.

Teen Titans #19

Feels like I'm missing something here...

Things I liked: they're working better as a team and Trigon is always a good addition.

Things I liked: it feels like there's pages missing. The story doesn't quite hold together. I don't think it's a crossover thing that I'm missing. I think it's plot points the writer left out.

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

Aquaman #18

He doesn't look like he enjoys being king.

Things I liked: Arm's sister Tula. Good to see her back in the DCU and interesting to have that relation.

Things I didn't like: more Mera. Sigh.

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

Talon #5

I've been having a problem skipping issues lately. Tis makes more sense in context.

Things I liked: nice to see Gotham in context. Nothing gets by Batman.

Things I didn't like: pretty solid issue actually. It had a little bit of everything.

Superman #18

Superman should totally have a blog.

Things I liked: Superman's response to the committee. He's right, they don't have the jurisdiction. He's got a home out of country and he doesn't have to show them around, nor does he have to sure dee anything to them.

Things I didn't like: Cat's website name is terrible. The idea isn't too bad but everything else is terrible.

Fury of Firestorm #18

It's too bad this series is being cancelled. I really like the relationship between Ronnie and Jason.

Things I liked: even though I knew it was a trap I liked the set up.

Things I didn't like: kind of a leap for Multiplex to figure out Ronnie's identity. Jason I could see, but nor Ronnie.

Monday, April 29, 2013

The Flash #19

Good things happening for Barry? This can't last.

Things I liked: Barry and the Trickster. The Flash has always had a pretty good relationship with his Rouges.

Things I didn't like: a sovereign nation of super criminals?

Sunday, April 28, 2013

Batman Incorporated #9

Aw... Talia seems to regret Damian's death just a touch. Maybe she'll steal the body for a Lazarus Pit resurrection.

Things I liked: Nightwing cut loose. He still lost, but he lost it first.

Things I didn't like: I get the feeling that Damian's entire purpose was to die. The new 52 just interrupted it a little.

Arrow #29

And a reminder about Shado.

Things I liked: I was kind of wondering how she got on the island.

Things I didn't like: I'd still like an explanation as to why she's so kick ass.

Saturday, April 27, 2013

All-Star Western #18

Next month is Booster Gold! I'd recognize that glove anywhere.

Things I liked: Arkham's attempts to follow Hex. It perfectly summed up the relationship the two have developed.

Things I didn't like: the backup feature was largely forgettable. I'm looking forward to a western Stormwatch. I just hope it starts going somewhere.

Thursday, April 25, 2013

Batman: The Dark Knight #1

See? I knew it wouldn't be good.

Things I liked: Batman dropping his pianist off was cute.

Things I didn't like: the Mad Hatter has entered Joker territory here. That's a little too much death. And Batman's taking liberties with his secret that I don't like. Neither of these moves feels like the characters that I'm used to.

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Voltron #11

Intrigue and mystery, not what I remember from the cartoon.

Things I liked: this is a mature story. It's not reselling Voltron, it's picking up for the fans.

Things I didn't like: their faces always look weird when they yell.

Sunday, April 21, 2013

Sword of Sorcery #6

John Constantine is a dick. Not new news, but relevant.

Things I liked: I like this new young crop of heroes that they're building.

Things I didn't like: have not been enthused with the Stalker back up. I'm cpgkad the next one is the last one.

Supergirl #18

I feel like I'm missing something about Lex Luthor. I wonder if it has something to do with Brainiac.

Things I liked: looks like Power Girl is going to get involved.

Things I didn't lie: Supergirl still acts like a spoiled teen.

MacGyver #5

This was a fun read. Nostalgia runs deep.

Things I liked: totally MacGyver, yet completely modern as well.

Things I didn't: did he really have to kiss her? There was attraction indicated through the rest if the story.

Vibe #2

When Vibe finds out what's actually going on it's going to be bad for Waller.

Things I liked: the beginning here's missteps. There are so many heroes that are established it's always fun to see one finding his way.

Things I didn't like: so Gypsy's an extra dimensional princess, eh?

Green Lantern: New Guardians #18

Sigh... More First Lantern nonsense.

Things I liked: no matter what, she can't get away from Hal.

Things I didn't like: this is what she'd choose? I'm not even sure women can be fighter pilots in the US Air Force yet.

Saturday, April 20, 2013

DC Universe Presents #18

And now Starfire. It's an Outlaw run.

Things I liked: she's more rounded here. More substance than in the Outlaws.

Things I didn't like: still one dimensional. This was all about her violence.

Catwoman #18

Aw... They care for one another and don't want to admit it.

Things I liked: when Catwoman realized there was something more going on in Batman's head and pulled him out of it. He needs people like her around.

Things I didn't like: her contact knowing that he's getting her into trouble. She doesn't need people like him around.

Batwoman #18

Trouble's brewing and I like it.

Things I liked: Kate's absolute disregard for authority. She doesn't rub anyone the right way.

Things I didn't like: Maggie's willingness to give up her dreams for Kate. She's a little too easy to sway to the vigilante lifestyle.

Thursday, April 18, 2013

Arrow #28

More in between episodes than we've seen for a while.

Things I liked: getting the background they don't have time for in the show. I don't know where tis idea started but it's a good one.

Things I didn't like: the cop Diggle talked to was way too free with information.

Nightwing #19

New artist and the fingertips are back. Yay! It's in red still, but that's OK.

Things I liked: good intro to a new life for Nightwing. He's got some new villains and a new complication in a room mate and a refusal to go to Bruce for anything. I like Kyle Higgins, I like tis new artist's look (though it may be a little young for Grayson). I think this could be fun.

Things I didn't like: aside from Dick Grayson looking a little young there wasn't much to not like.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #19

Amnesia? Lame.

Things I liked: Roy's path to enlightenment was amusing. It's exactly how I pictured it would go for him.

Things I didn't like: this issue picked up from an issue that hasn't been released yet. That's poor planning. Add that to the amnesia story they're going to tell and this was one of my least favourite this month.

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

Wonder Woman #19

I'm kind of glad Orion's gone. I'll miss him but I don't think there was room for him.

Things I liked: Diana's army. I like when she has a way of pulling people together.

Things I didn't like: Poseidon and Hades conspiring. I don't like that they're playing everyone.

Justice League #19

I'm on record as saying I don't like Superman and Wonder Woman together but surely Diana knows Batman well enough that she knows what he has in the Batcave.

Things I liked: there were a lot of characters in this issue, but I felt they all had equal time.

Things I didn't like: little too easy for the guy to get in the Batcave. I'm hoping its not a clone or a Earth X Batman.

Sunday, April 14, 2013

Threshold #3

The more I read of Caul, the more I like him.

Things I liked: I can't wait for all these threads to come together.

Things I didn't like: I could do without the extra cost of the Larfleeze backup.

Demon Knights #17

I thought events were moving too fast... Turns out I missed an issue.

Things I liked: Ex's conversation with Vandal Savage. They make a good pair.

Things I didn't like: the Horsewoman's conversations with her horse. The horse just seems to be too much.

Constantine #1

John Constantine is not a good man. He doesn't even try to be. This isn't quite what I was expecting but I like the mystery.

Things I liked: lots of explanation in the text boxes yet I still don't know exactly what's going on. It's a good mystery spinning out.

Things I didn't like: Sargon the Sorceress. She's not even a little original.

Arrow #27

Pretty low grade for Ollie. He must be planning to keep the top guy alive though.

Things I liked: at least the cops aren't corrupt like in Gotham.

Things I didn't like: McKenna and Lance have a vendetta for the Hood, and now they can pull in someone else? Somebody's gotta think he might not be so bad.

Batman and Robin #19

So if Red Robin guest this month and Red Hood the next, does this mean next up is Nightwing and then we either get a new Robin or Damian returns?

Thins I liked: hard not to chuckle at the absurdity. I think Tomasi planned it that way. Mi especially liked the panel after Tim blew up the lab, the silence was deafening.

Things I didn't like: seems a little extreme, even for Batman. Damian may have been the one Robin that followed him unquestioningly, but Bruce did not return that ,even if trust. I think someone feels very guilty.

Batman #19

Yay! A Batman/Superman backup. And they're talking about their friendship.

Things I liked: I like this team a lot. Scott Snyder has the right touch for Batman's dialogue and agree Capullo is able to catch subtleties in expression.

Things I didn't like: kinda saw Clayface coming. Having Bruce be a bank robber as a little too much of a tell.

Batgirl #13

Hey! A cover that almost accurately describes what's happening inside!

Things I liked: that Barbara so readily accepted her transgendered friend. I never think about it but this book is written I the States where that's still a big thing.

Things I didn't like: Commissioner Gordon knows his son is not right. Why would he suddenly turn on Batgirl?

Worlds' Finest #10

I'm still not sure how Helena found out about Damian.

Things I liked: the look in Helena's eyes when she realized Batman was coming. It conveyed that she just was not ready.

Things I didn't like: Power Girl acting like a super ex-girlfriend.

Swamp Thing #18

This feels like the end of the series. It's not, but it feels that way.

Things I liked: Abby's evolved form is pretty.

Things I didn't like: all that effort and they can never be together again?

Green Lantern #18

No! I don't want a Hal Jordan Black Lantern! I like him green.

Things I liked: the art this issue was phenomenal. The mood was captured perfectly by the colouring.

Things I didn't like: Sinestro still gets to be a Green Lantern.

Earth 2 #10

This Dr. Fate is more of a whiner than I remember.

Things I liked: Wotan does not care. He's using Jay because he's there.

Things I didn't like: antagonistic Alan Scott, seems like he should be a but more willing to go along than he is. I'd almost say they're setting up romance. Except Kendra's a girl.

Dial 'H' for Hero #10

That is the most awkward kiss ever.

Things I liked: S, I, D, E. Awesome wrinkle to the dials.

Things I didn't like: this romance seems to be coming out of nowhere. She didn't even seem to like him that much just a few issues ago.

Arrow #26

This recap is from a whole ago. Not very concurrent with the series (unless it's just showing the happiness before it all falls apart).

Things I liked: the flashbacks to before Ollie returned always help flesh out the story. It's effective in the show and it can be in the comic too.

Things I didn't like: Laurel. I don't like like character. I don't like her with Ollie. I have a feeling that her relationship with Tommy will fall apart and she'll be back with Oliver and that's a shame.

Animal Man #18

At least it wasn't all a dream, but alternate timeline is almost as bad.

Things I liked: Buddy's devotion to his family. That always comes through so strongly in this series. He does just feel like a father.

Things I didn't like: Cliff's death. It feels too much like it's been tacked on because they need to make something happen.

Detective Comics #19

I was wondering what they were going to do when their big comics started hitting milestones. Technically, this is the 900th issue of Detective Comics but they started over from one. I thought they might abandon the whole 52 idea to mark it. Instead, a giant issue like those that haven't been seen for decades. A lot more than ten cents though.

I was hoping for one big story. It's several small ones, but at least they're connected.

Things I liked: great team for this book. Writing and art were both above board. It felt special.

Things I didn't like: Nightwing just leaving the city in trouble. I know he's hot a beef with Batman, but it's out of character for him to abandon Gotham. He knew something was going on. He was wearing a mask against contagion. He left anyway. He must be livid.

Green Arrow #19

I know there's going to be that read the and think of the TV series. But Green Arrow did have this background before.

Things I liked: brutal. So brutal.

Things I didn't like: where'd the kid come from?

Talon #6

I thought something like this would happen.

Things I liked: using your daughter to keep the man occupied? Classic Casey, classic.

Things I didn't like: how could so many Talons keep appearing under Batman's nose?

Superman #17

Kara finally came to her senses!

Things I liked: Superman really let loose on H'El. He should have done that ages ago.

Things I didn't like: ugh, time travel.

Fury of Firestorm #17

Firestorm must feel popular this month. Both the Titans and the Justice League asked him to join.

Things I liked: Ronnie angst! I don't know why, but I live when bad things happen to thus character.

Things I didn't like: the team up seemed contrived. I hate when superheroes meet and the irst thing they do is fight.

The Flash #17

Well, that sort of ended with a whimper.

Things I liked: some of the panels are so creative!

Things I didn't like: and no one remembers what happened. Yet people still know that Barry's lying.

Batman Incorporated #8

Somehow I was expecting something more for the death of Robin. Death in the Family was much more epic.

Things I liked: Damian and Nightwing together. Morrison always wrote them well.

Things I didn't like: is he all the way dead? He was killed by an advanced aged clone. I feel there may be something more.

Arrow #25

Ollie must be the worst secret identity keeper ever. And his friends don't help.

Things I liked: nice recap. Seems a little early but maybe we'll find out more about the island.

Things I didn't like: the artist still can't draw Oliver.

Aquaman #17

Poor Arthur, nobody cares about him but the sea creatures.

Things I liked: the pull Aquaman feels between his roles. This is one of the few superhero comics that get into the personal lives.

Things I didn't like: the new artist. Arthur looks ugly now. Other things are great, I just don't like the way is face is drawn.

All-Star Western #17

A new backup featuring Stormwatch. I like the idea of Stormwatch, but I didn't like where the series was going.

Things I liked: I cannot get enough of the buddy story that is Jonah and Arkham. I love these two together. And Vandal Savage was only a matter of time.

Things I didn't like: the idea that Savage can carry plagues.

Teen Titans #18

Tim didn't even like Damian and he's going to use his death as a crusade? I don't tipping so.

Things I liked: good to see Superboy back with the group.

Things I didn't like: Red Robin's ends justify the means attitude. It doesn't feel like him. I still think there's something going on with him. And after the conversation with Alfred I expected that he'd reveal his name.

Batman: the Dark Knight #18

This can't be good. Every time Bruce tells a woman who he really is, she dies. I expect the same for his piano player.

Things I liked: the conversation with Tweedle Dee was amusing. Batman does have a signature move. And no, he doesn't care if it breaks you.

Things I didn't liked: sadly, it's the art. It's so inconsistent. It has great presence, like when Catwoman presses herself up against him and he breasts fold the way they're supposed to. But whenever a character is holding something it just doesn't look right. And there some posing that just isn't natural.
