Arrow #11

I wonder if they're planning to bring Helena back in the series, they're giving her a lot of focus here.

Things I liked: the parallels between the now and her training.

Things I didn't like: Ollie has to be going easy on her, there's no way she should be able to take him down.

Nightwing #15

I find it interesting that the Joker is going after the other Robins himself but is attacking those that Dick has chosen to surround himself. I think the Joker sees more in common between Batman and the first Robin than he'd like to admit.

Things I liked: the panel where Dick and Sofia kissed. The watermark images behind him of what was going through his head show that, like Batman, the death of his parents is till very much the defining moment in his life.

Things I didn't like: the conversation between him and Barbara seemed out of place. They keep running into one another as each moves from one event to the next but the conversations aren't in sync between their two titles.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #15

So many things I'd been waiting for: the reunion of Joker and Jason, the reunion of Roy and Kori with the Titans and the probable reunion of Dick and two of his best friends.

Things I liked: this did not disappoint. Everything was pretty much as I'd hoped it would be, but the best part? Roy's no longer out of it. He's still got the terrible hat, but he seems to be coming off whatever he was on.

Things I didn't like: the idea that Joker created Jason, as hinted in the zero issue.

Wonder Woman #15

I get what they're trying to do here. It's building a modern myth. I'm just not sure if others would get it without being well versed in traditional mythology as well as DC myth.

Things I liked: nice to see Orion again.

Things I didn't like: again, two heroes meet and the first thing they do is fight.

Young Justice #23

Batgirl battles Match alone! Next issue.

Things I liked: there was a lot going on in this issue but nothing really seemed to happen. It was one giant bridge.

Things I didn't like: too many characters. Nothing gs the attention that it deserves. Especially with the flashback to Dick's 14th birthday party too.

Friday, December 21, 2012

Superboy #14

Superboy is not having the best time. And it's stretching over three series!

Things I liked: Miguel is a good friend. He's what Kon needs.

Things I didn't like: I don't know. This was a pretty solid issue.

The Ravagers #6

Still not sure about this one. I like the relationships they're building but I don't get why Superboy is hanging around.

Things I like: the day trip was fun. It's giving them character.

Things I didn't like: new costumes again? And not a good one for Terra.

Legion Lost #14

This seems to be moving from one fight scene to the next. Not why I started reading it.

Things I liked: Timber Wolf seems to be the only Legionnaire that actually has it together.

Things I didn't like: multiple crossovers. Teen Titans and Ravagers in the mix. It's going to be confusing.

Thursday, December 20, 2012

Green Lantern Corps #14

Wow, I almost feel sorry for Gardner.

Things I liked: Salaak and Killowog are starting to figure out what's going on. This should be good.

Things I didn't like: Guy just quitting, that doesn't seem like him. I hope he gave them a fake ring.

Demon Knights #14

Plans within plans within plans. That looks like one heck of a battle brewing.

Things I liked: the look in Jason's eyes when he switched to find himself at Tristan's sword.

Things I didn't like: it did seem too easy. I hope Ex really hasn't sold them out.

Arrow #10

I like Dig, even if sometimes he's used as the conscience of the piece.

Things I liked: just the simple narrative. The lack of word balloons made the story darker. It was more about the action than what they ha to say about it.

Things I didn't like: "Cheer! Cheer!"? Lamest sound bubble ever.

Batgirl #15

I still don't get why the Joker is going there with Batgirl, but I guess that's the point.

Things I liked: Barbara's determination. She's not going to let him get her again.

Things I didn't like: her proposal to kill him. It's just not a Bat thing to do. That's why Jason is the black sheep.

Monday, December 17, 2012

Batman #15

And in the backup story, the Riddler gets respect. He's a hard character to write, simply because his riddles are always his downfall. I think the Joker's right. If Eddie didn't leave the riddles, Batman wouldn't find him.

Things I liked: Nightwing and the rest of the Robins (+Batgirl) confronting Bruce. There was a lot there and every character not only had something to say, they said it differently, and the way they'd be expected to say it.

Things I didn't like: over too soon. I really like what Snyder is doing to these characters with this arc.

Sunday, December 16, 2012

Batman and Robin #15

There's something wrong about the Joker and Robin together. I think it's because Damian doesn't seem all that different from the Joker.

Things I liked: the seeds the Joker's planting in Damian's mind. It's unsettling.

Things I didn't like: I really hope that they didn't blind Alfred. Alfred is the constant. He needs to be there.

Thursday, December 13, 2012

Worlds' Finest #6

It seems like they give this whole secret thing way too little credit. Karen doesn't want Sipergilr to see her, but is willing to parade around naked in front of her company, who must all know how she got the data on the satellite.

Things I liked: oh, I want Helena to meet the other Robins.

Things I didn't like: Karen's company policies.

Stormwatch #14

I keep giving Stormwatch just one more chance, maybe it's time to cut it loose.

Things I liked: tying Demon Knights into Stormwatch.

Things I didn't like: terrible time for Apollo to act like a girl. I'm not even sure how Midnighter survived.

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

The Phantom Stranger #2

They're trying so hard to run through all the supernatural entities in the DCU, maybe too hard.

Things I liked: Jim Corrigan! I love the Spectre.

Things I didn't like: still don't like that he has a family. At least it's not real.

Swamp Thing #14

I can't wait to see how the Bat family came through Rot World.

Things I liked: that the weapon that can destroy the rot is in Gotham.

Things I didn't like: Alec's fixation on Abby.

Earth 2 #6

Green Lantern really is a giant ass. I hope it's just because he feels bad for nearly falling for the pseudo- Sam.

Things I liked: it's weird seeing the veterans just figuring things out.

Things I didn't like: why do they have to be such dicks?

Dial 'H' for Hero #6

For a fill in issue this was actually pretty amusing.

Things I liked: that Manteau had rules when the dialed hero was too much to go out. There are some pretty crazy stereotypes that have been put into comics.

Things I didn't like: potty humour. The horse did not have shit on people to save the day.

Saturday, December 8, 2012

Arrow #8

Best of both worlds, marrying a teacher and connected to the mob.

Things I liked: that it acknowledged Helen's past in the DCU.

Things I didn't like: still going from 0-60 with nothing in between.

Animal Man #14

I still don't quite get what's going on with Animal Man.

Things I liked: nice to see Black Orchid again. And to have it acknowledged that orchid are a bit of both the Red and the Green.

Things I didn't like: well, at least there's a reason Maxine is precocious. I still would've liked her older.

Friday, December 7, 2012

Detective Comics #15

I've never been a big fan of Clayface, and I'm still not. The weakest of the "Death of the Family" crossovers so far.

Things I liked: I did like how vulnerable Basil was. I can imagine that since he's been transformed he's been lonely, who wants to date mud?

Things I didn't like: taking over the Penguin's empire and the. Calling yourself Emperor Penguin? Lame.

Thursday, December 6, 2012

Talon #1

I didn't like the idea of the Talons getting their own series. They were great foil for Batman, but undead assassins don't make for a good series. I like Scott Snyder so I gave it a chance. I'm glad I did.

Things I liked: he's not dead. That's really the first thing. Plus he's got a reason to be doing what he's going to do.

Things I didn't like: would have liked a little more background. I'm really curious as to who Calvin Rose is. They didn't tell me enough!

Superman #14

I kind of agree with Clark. News isn't news anymore. Wasn't expecting him to quit though, he does need a day job.

Things I liked: Jimmy getting some. It's nice to see him as a real person rather than some exaggerated nerd.

Things I didn't like: Supergirl going on about Krypton again. She's been there, she knows its dead.

MacGyver #1

How can I resist MacGyver? I was trying to figure out if this was during the series or post-series. I'm leaning to the latter. He's part of the Phoenix Foundation and not the DEA.

Things I liked: it felt like MacGyver. There's the narrative intro, the hot chick that distrusts him, it's about friends and, of course, science!

Things I didn't like: the plot is a little far fetched, but what MacGyver wasn't?

Monday, December 3, 2012

Fury of Firestorm #13

This is another issue that makes me wish I'd read the zeroes.

Things I liked: yay! Just one Firestorm again!

Things I didn't like: things seem back to normal after what had just happened. Their parents are back in town. Ronnie has both arms... I'm a little lost

The Flash #13

I've been getting a lot of ribbing lately about DC's love of gorillas. The Flash is not helping my case.

Things I liked: some of the panel placement this issue were amazing. I love the art for this book.

Things I didn't like: I'm not down with the gorillas connection to the Speed Force. I guess it's an explanation of some ki d.

Batman Incorporated #4

I don't get this one, usually they're really good about crossovers in the Bat titles but something's off here. Damian still has his price, and Robins going out under a different identity is expected but I don't get the Damian hate on Jason or the declaration that he's going back to his mother. None of it works.

Things I liked: the Bat assault was kinda neat. I'm still not sold on incorporation.

Things I didn't like: I can only assure this some kind of fever dream because it doesn't track.

Sunday, December 2, 2012

Arrow #8

This is a much better story about him than he last one.

Things I liked: the locals trying to track him down.

Things I didn't like: he let them get too close.

Aquaman #13

I'm satisfied with how this arc played out.

Things I liked: Arthur didn't kill Manta. That would have really changed his character. I also really liked the last few pages where the Prisoner went to talk with the families o the soldiers he carries around. I found it touching.

Things I didn't like: this whole turns of Atlantis thing coming up. It might be good, but it seems like its been done before.

Saturday, December 1, 2012

All-Star Western #13

Jimmy Palmiotti must be enjoying his romp through DC's western characters. He's pulling in so many of them.

Things I liked: Haley's Circus. It roots this comic in the universe to have things that we're used to seeing in Gotham.

Things I didn't like: Talulah Black. I like her; I just don't want her with the boys all the time. It's like a girl in Supernatural - it breaks up the bromance. Hopefully she won't fall to the same fate.

Friday, November 30, 2012

Batman: the Dark Knight #14

It's been a whole since I've seen Batman written so wrong. I'm hoping its still the fear gas.

Things I liked: that the Scarecrow isn't all bad. It makes him less cartoony.

Things I didn't like: how unprepared and brutal Batman was. He left a little girl to die in an explosion! He shot his grappling hook through Scarecrow's jaw! That's coming a little too close to being the thing he's trying to save the city from.

Teen Titans #14

I'm a little disappointed with this one. It doesn't help that they're losing my two favourite characters to family problems.

Things I liked: this artist is really good with expressions. What the characters are feeling is very apparent.

Things I didn't like: the return of the Silent Armour happened offscreen. There was this huge buildup and then she just comes back with it on.

Thursday, November 29, 2012

Sword of Sorcery #1

I'm not sure about this one. I was more interested in the back up story than the main one but when I thought more about it I wanted to see where it was headed. I'll give it another chance.

Things I liked: the Beowulf story. There were a lot of little touches that make it intriging.

Things I didn't like: I don't get why Amy's mother dragged them out if Gemworld. It seems overly complex right now.

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Supergirl #13

I hope Sanctuary teaches her English. I, getting tired of the dialog box.

Things I liked: I'm looking forward to the Super book crossover. I think the Bat crossover will be better but I've been waiting to see the Superboy/Superman meeting for a while now.

Things I didn't like: oh noes! Her father was experimenting in her. Apparently giving her the yellow sun powers wouldn't be enough.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #13

I'm missing something. One of the zero issues may have had important information.

Things I liked: Kyle's really taking action here. He's often very passive, but here he's doing something. Even if its for Star Sapphire.

Things I didn't like: that the Third Army will grab anyone. Soon there won't be anything left in the universe.

DC Universe Presents #13

I am a Blue Devil fan, and I'll admit, I only know Black Lightning from the Super Friends. It's an interesting combination.

Things I liked: it's time these two made an appearance in the new 52. I miss Blue Devil and Black Lightning has lots of potential.

Things I didn't like: Blue Devil's new costume is interesting, but I'm not sure where he puts his legs. The backward facing knee throws me off.

Catwoman #13

I'll admit it, this one didn't make much sense.

Things I liked: she really does know who she is and isn't afraid to admit it.

Things I didn't like: stealing giant chess pieces? That blew up with people inside? That's off. Even for Gotham.

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Batwoman #13

Goodness this was wordy. It takes way longer to read this title than any other. Just drinking in the art at times.

Things I liked: wordy, but it had a lot to say. It was able to move every character forward.

Things I didn't like: not quite in sync with Wonder Woman. She's the last of the Amazons right now.

Arrow #7

He's much less deadly in the comics than he is on the show.

Things I liked: yay! Tommy! I have a feeling that there's more to him than we've seen so far.

Things I didn't like: didn't see more of Tommy. He's still a figure to show how different Oliver is now.

Nightwing #14

I believe I predicted this. I'd have to go back and check but I'm pretty sure I called Nightwing losing to Lady Shiva in their first encounter. It is his way. At least she gave him the injured excuse. He didn't have to pull it out in his defense.

Things I liked: the compliment on his grace. It a visual medium bit not moving so having other characters comment on his abilities gives a better picture of what he can do.

Things I didn't like: Joker going after Raya in prison. There are others who mean more to him.

Monday, November 26, 2012

Wonder Woman #14

The Wonder Woman here is much more confident than the one in Justice League. Must be more in her element.

Things I liked: Siraca's origin is suitable tragic to be that if one of Zeus's children. I'm wondering why Diana is harboring Hera as well.

Things I didn't like: Diana comparing her pain to Siraca's. Siraca's is dead. That trumps a lot of things.

Saturday, November 24, 2012

Red Hood and the Outlaws #14

Crossover city! Clearing up a bit about Starfire and the H'El on Earth thing and then launching into Death of the Family. That's not even touching whatever it is that Roy's got going on.

Things I liked: nice to Jason's point of view again. And he's right, Superman is a jerk.

Things I didn't like: yes, Starfire has big breasts, is there a reason why her outfit has to accentuate this?

Justice League #14

Watching Superman and Wonder Woman make out over the fields of Smallville makes Batman a creeper. He at least has the excuse that Booster told him not to let it happen.

Things I liked: I actually liked Superman showing Wonder Woman his home town. It made both of them more human than I've seen for a while. And I hate Superman normally.

Things I didn't like: Batman is sort of using Cyborg as a tool. Cyborg has to stop Superman from going crazy and he has to translate. In contrast, he's becoming less human.

I feel like I should talk about the Shazam back up to this story. It's sort of the reason I don't like backups. They take up space and don't usually get the chance to really get going. This Shazam story really seems to be plodding along. It's going to come to some kind of a head soon but then I feel like they're just going to let the character sit around.

Friday, November 23, 2012

Young Justice #22

One if the best things about reading this series isvthatbit tides me over until I can watch more episodes. Especially with the way they air in Canada.

Things I liked: Batgirl and Nightwing communicating through the barrier. The bats do bring the impossible to reality, often making it look easier than you thought it was.

Things I didn't like: and this seems minor but Barbara's nickname has always been "Babs" not "Barb". It just sounds wrong.

Thursday, November 22, 2012

Team 7 #1

The new 52 is only a year old and they're already having trouble with consistency. This is a neat idea, but it's just not going to work.

Things I liked: the idea of a covert organization trying to deal with the idea of metahumans.

Things I didn't like: Grifter being Grifter before the Daemonites, Deathstroke with two eyes. Things that don't fit I don't like.

Superboy #13

If I'd read this one first I think Ravagers would have made more sense.

Things I liked: there's a lot going on with Superboy and I really want to find out what they're planning to do to him.

Things I didn't like: some of the art was a little spotty. One with his hand didn't make it look like a hand at all.

The Ravagers #5

Superboy is becoming the Batman of the teen set - cant out a team together without him on it.

Things I liked: they are becoming a team. Plus, Miles Caulder. Thought it was him, but didn't recognize him without the wheelchair. Maybe more of the Doom Patrol will show up.

Things I didn't like: why did Superboy and Caitlyn have to fight?

The Phantom Stranger #1

I've always had a soft spot for the Phantom Stranger, I'm not sure this one is going to work.

Things I liked: nice to see Raven again. Some of the best Titans have been sorely missed.

Things I didn't like: I can have him confirmed to be Judas, that works. But a wife and family? That doesn't make him a stranger.

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

Legion Lost #13

This was a nothing issue. I'm having trouble remembering what I actually read.

Things I liked: expanding Chameleon Girl's story. They've been hinting something from the beginning; now to see what it is.

Things I didn't like: the implication of other agents that she doesn't know about. And that it could be anybody.

Monday, November 19, 2012

Green Lantern Corps #13

So the Guardians' newest army is built on the bodies of their Lanterns. This seems bad.

Things I liked: there's actually something Guy cares about more than himself.

Things I didn't like: don't like the Guardians right now.

Demon Knights #13

All if the torments make sense; except the Shining Knight.

Things I liked: Jason freed from the curse. Not so much that he was, but how badly he was handling it.

Things I didn't like: the Shining Knight's torment of being forced to choose a gender seemed so out of place with everything that's been done with her character. Failing her quest would have seemed a better choice.

Arrow #6

I was hoping they'd reveal how he learned Russian.

Things I liked: his interactions with Diggle are feeling more natural.

Things I didn't like: feel it was too early to send him away from Starling City. It's his mission right now. This could have been done without going to Moscow.

Batman and Robin #14

More zombies! Not undead zombies though, cultist zombies.

Things I liked: the last couple of pages made this story for me. All of Damian's bravado. All of Bruce's iciness. Just melted away into the two if them hugging. I felt it was so important that they did it without the masks too. It made it father and son, not Batman and Robin.

Things I didn't like: not quite sure how the Joker worked his way in here. Seems more like he took credit for someone else's work.

Sunday, November 18, 2012

Batman #14

I love the way Scott Snyder writes the Joker. He's creepy like Heath Ledger but I can "hear" Mark Hamill's delivery.

Things I liked: just the premise of this arc is great. The Joker has planned this out. Skipping past the "business" part of the encounter so they could talk was insane brilliance.

Things I didn't like: that he knows. He didn't in Batgirl, but he does here. I don't like that their identities are that easy to figure out (though I did enjoy the shot at Nightwing, he and the Joker have almost as much history as he and Batman. )

Batgirl #14

The Joker is one sick man, as much as he creeps me out, Barbara's brother James may be creepier.

Things I liked: was a little worried that the Joker did know Batgirl's identity, was almost relieved when it was revealed to be James.

Things I didn't like: he asked her to marry him, really?

Saturday, November 17, 2012

Worlds' Finest #5

A bridge issue. They have to have them now and then.

Things I liked: it showed how different Power Girl and the Huntress can be.

Things I didn't like: why does Karen lose her clothes every issue? Especially noticed with Helena joining women's rights.

Voltron Year One #5

Wow! This was such an intense issue.

Things I liked: Lance is almost the character that I remember. He's getting there and maybe this experience with Keith will get their relationship where I like it.

Things I didn't like: a little more info on why these aliens hate Keith and Scen in particular would have been nice. I guess they're waiting for next issue.

Swamp Thing Annual #1

It kind of feels like they're rewriting history.

Things I liked: seeing Alec before Swamp Thing. I feel like they made him a bit too much (still being a student hurts your scientific rep no matter how brilliant you are).

Things I didn't like: that he and Abby had met before it's just that neither of them remember it because of a necrotic plant. As a biologist I cannot accept a necrotic plant. Zombie plants just don't work. I've played the game, the plant protect against zombies.

Friday, November 16, 2012

Swamp Thing #13

This is sort of the same problem I had with Animal Man. I don't know how it's going to be normal.

Things I liked: I really want to see what they do with this story. With Poison Ivy working for them it points out just how few allies of the Green there are.

Things I didn't like: I like Deadman, but what does he have to do with the Green?

Superman Annual #1

I always forget how many aliens there are in the DC Universe.

Things I liked: always like seeing Superman get his ass kicked, but I was expecting him to win in the end.

Things I didn't like: very wordy issue. Sometimes seeing every thought is a distraction.

Stormwatch #13

I know who the Demon is and I know he's not some crazy kid.

Things I liked: that Apollo is trying to be a real person. He seems the most stable of the whole group.

Things I didn't like: the Demon is Jason Blood. Jason Blood is immortal because of Etrigan. It has always been this way. He shouldn't be popping out of random kids, that's not the curse.

Thursday, November 15, 2012

Green Lantern #13

You know the one thing Earth doesn't need? Another freaking Green Lantern! Five is just way too many.

Things I liked: nice to see Obama recognized in the DC Universe.

Things I didn't like: I probably should have read the 0 issue, but what happened to Sinestro and Jordan. I want Hal as Green Lantern and thus series hasn't given it to me yet.

Earth 2 #5

So far this was my least favourite issue.

Things I liked: coming together against a common enemy.

Things I didn't like: the agenda of the world government.

Dial 'H' for Hero #5

Wow! This story is so much deeper than I thought it world be.

Things I liked: tied up the story arc nicely. Back to one dial ghat Nelson claims.

Things I didn't like: when nothing eats nothing you get something. I'll have to think on that one but for right now it doesn't make sense.

Arrow #5

A bomb? This is an actual development that changes the way I've been watching the show.

Things I liked: seeing Moira and Robert interact.

Things I didn't like: the Queen's Gambit was way more intact than it should have been. If she's had it four years, why is she still working with him?

Arrow #4

Yay! Useful background information!

Things I liked: I've been really curious about Diggle's background.

Things I didn't like: I wish the art was a bit crisper. I'm having trouble identifying the characters.

Arrow #3

If Na Wei had appeared in the series this would be a great intro. But she hasn't shown up yet.

Things I liked: they're trying to expand the world.

Things I didn't like: from experience; peroxide doesn't turn black hair white.

Arrow #2

They tries to do a story about the Hood without having him in it. It doesn't work as well as it does for Batman.

Things I liked: teased out a bit more about what's up with his mother.

Things I didn't like: seemed more like a story for the future when he's more established.

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Arrow Special Edition #1

The man has balls, you have to give him that.

Things I liked: it felt like an Arrow episode. This is something he would take on.

Things I didn't like: does he have to leave clues to his identity everywhere? Luckily, he's not as memorable as he should be.

Arrow #1

I've really been enjoying Young Justice so I thought I'd try their other tie in.

Things I liked: a few extra bits added to the story.

Things I didn't like: seemed a little short.

Animal Man #13

Rotworld is not a good place to be.

Things I liked: how far things have fallen without the avatars.

Things I didn't like: rapid passing of time. The rest of the DC Universe is not dealing with this so I can only surmise that time travel will be involved somehow.

Monday, November 12, 2012

Detective Comics #14

As I've said; they've been doing great things with the Rogues Gallery lately. Now it's Ivy's turn.

Things I liked: the art here is stunning. From Ivy's costume to Batman's stubble at the end of the night to Damian actually looking capable.

Things I didn't like: they're trying to be internally consistent within the Bat Universe but forgot that Damian wasn't at the party because he didn't want to be. He wasn't there because he has a price on his head.

Sunday, November 11, 2012

Batgirl Annual #1

Stunning. This one just looks beautiful. And it touched me.

Things I liked: Batgirl's kiss of Ricky. It was amusing. Also, her reaction to Catwoman's sacrifice. It nearly brought a year to my eye.

Things I didn't like: Talon. I don't like the idea of this character. She's going to be seen in a lot of places soon so I should get used to her.

Teen Titans #13

Finally! The origin of Wonder Girl. Now I know more about her.

Things I liked: the way the story was told. The interplay of Superboy, Red Robin and Cassandra is fun to watch.

Things I didn't like: now Amanda Waller is going to hunt down the Titans as well? Who doesn't she have on her list.

Batman the Dark Knight #13

This is the darkest I've ever seen the Scarecrow. The new 52 is really pushing the Rogue's Gallery.

Things I liked: the Scarecrow is almost to be pitied. Almost.

Things I didn't like: Batman's fear dream. I go back and forth on it. There were bits that I totally agreed with and bits that didn't feel right.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #13

I'm still not sure if Kom'ander is a hero or a villain. But hey! The Joker next issue.

Things I liked: I'm really liking Roy's narration. I hope Starfire doesn't hurt him.

Things I didn't like: very little Red Hood. I miss Jason.

Nightwing #13

Nightwing begins his search for Lady Shiva and, I expect, his ass-whopping to follow. It's his own book after all, nothing goes his way. Bruce won't help him, and won't appreciate he's trying to stop something. Same for Batgirl. I feel for the poor guy.

Things I liked: that he still has all these old contacts, like the Penguin, that kid him about his Boy Wonder days.

Things I didn't like: Batgirl really brushed him off. I get where she's coming from but she came across as a bitch.

Justice League #13

I like Oliver Queen. Shame his series just wasn't what I expected it to be.

Things I liked: the League's support of each other.

Things I didn't like: if Cheetah's scratches turned Superman, why didn't anything happen to Wonder Woman?

Young Justice #21

A story told in more than two parts! It was something that bothered me before.

Things I liked: I really liked the way Nightwing was drawn this issue. It was well captured.

Things I didn't like: the collector didn't quite collect the League's heavies. Martian Manhunter probably should have been grabbed too.

Wonder Woman #13

I wonder why Hermes wasn't invited to Apollo's party. Maybe Athena is with him.

Things I liked: I like the way the gods are interacting with the world and with each other.

Things I didn't like: I kind if figured that the little girl was a test. It was not a surprise when she "died".

Batman #13

The Joker can be one of Batman's creepiest villains if he's written properly. Scott Snyder knows how to write the Joker.

Things I liked: just the right edge to creepy the whole way through. I can't wait for this series if every issue is going to be this good.

Things I didn't like: I sort of font like Joker's plan. I'm willing to give it the benefit of doubt because this just looks awesome.

Batgirl #13

The main story was just tidying up Knightfall. A good story, but I'm really excited by what's coming.

Things I liked: little clues being placed for later.

Things I didn't like: the villains thSt are being broken out. They weren't that interesting for the most part.

Batman and Robin #13

Batman versus zombies! It's not looking good for Robin.

Things I liked: the quiet moment between father and son talking about Talia.

Things I didn't like: Damian still doesn't seem to have the right voice. It's getting better but it's not what I was used to from before.

Detective Comics #13

I'm sure I've said it before, but I'm not looking back to check, that I like Batman stories where he only appears as the subject of conversation. The back up story about how the criminal element deals with Batman was a really good example of this.

Things I liked: I like this version of the Penguin. Getting his name recognized like a boss. Great that he was targeting Bruce Wayne too. I don't know if Nightwing is close enough to contain Bruce's secret.

Things I didn't like: just a solid story. Nothing really to complain about with this one. Maybe Nightwing as just a good soldier?

Teen Titans #0

Hmm... Not sure on thus one. Great story but they change some key details of Red Robin's origin.

Things I liked: Tim is great. The detective skills are all there and they made him into a world class gymnast so it's not coming out of nowhere. I like that he's the most driven of the Robins.

Things I didn't like: he was never Robin. Out of respect for Jason is great. But it feels wrong. The other thing I've always liked about Tim is that he figured out who Batman was through Dick. Now he hasn't. It always gave Tim and Dick a real connection that Rim didn't have with the other Robins. The family doesn't seem as close.

Batman the Dark Knight #0

I was worried that Batman was going to find a reason for his parents' deaths. I like it better when there is no reason.

Things I liked: giving a time frame for his obsession. He hasn't let it go.

Things I didn't like: the cell phone picture at Bruce's graduation. Anachronistic.

Voltron Year One #4

I thought Sven was taking prescription drugs, guess I was wrong.

Things I liked: the plan was a good one. I'm very curious to see where they're going to go from here.

Things I didn't like: Sven's girlfriend being the one his team had to work with. I understand it for story purposes but the military generally frowns on it.

Sunday, November 4, 2012

Voltron #8

I'm still a little confused by the time jump. And I've just reread the whole series!

Things I liked: lots of intrigue in this story. I think things are not as they seem.

Things I a didn't like: not liking the art I the last two issues. It's inconsistent and blocky.

Voltron #7

It's not often I have to agree with Keith, but here I do. Don't trust Lotar.

Things I liked: good pacing, looking forward to the next issue.

Things I didn't like: Lance talking Keith down? Seems they don't know what to do with these characters.

Thursday, November 1, 2012

Superman #12

So Superman feels bad about people getting hurt around him. Makes sense.

Things I liked: Clark letting loose.

Things I didn't like: those Russians really don't trust him.

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Supergirl #12

A new phase starts with Superman being a dick again.

Things I liked: cool fortress at the bottom of the ocean.

Things I didn't like: she's very, very stubborn.

Friday, October 26, 2012

Green Lantern New Guardians #10

I could have sworn I already read this one, but I can't find a record of it.

Things I liked: the Blue Lanterns can really cut loose when they have a Green Lantern present.

Things I didn't like: don't understand why the Reach were after them.

Saturday, October 20, 2012

Green Lantern Annual #1

The Guardians are creepy, little, evil dwarfs.

Things I liked: I did not see this coming. This is the creepiest plan ever.

Things I didn't like: I wonder how dead Hal Jordan is. He seems to be Johns' favourite so it can't be for long.

Green Lantern #10

I missed one! I was kinda confused by the story.

Things I liked: that Jordan wants to believe Sinestro can be redeemed.

Things I didn't like: I missed it and I didn't notice. That says something.

Friday, October 19, 2012

Fury of Firestorm #12

That was worth the wait.

Things I liked: climaxed nicely. The boys are back together and Zither is out of the picture.

Things I didn't like: not sure I like where they're going with Firehawk.

Thursday, October 18, 2012

Flash Annual #1

Tying up loose ends before moving on.

Things I liked: answered some questions I had about the Rogues.

Things I didn't like: I'm used to better art than this.

Flash #12

The Flash has an interesting rogues' gallery. Not as good as Batman's but very few are. Johns is doing his best to give them real character.

Things I liked: Golden Glider is so much better here. So much better than as an ice skater.

Things I didn't like: can anything go right for Barry?

Monday, October 8, 2012

Batman Incorporated #3

I can't believe they left Damian alone. Don't they know better?

Things I liked: Matches Malone is such a great character as a disguise for Batman. He's got a lot if personality.

Things I didn't like: Dick must have been wearing lifts, there's no way he could loom otherwise.

Aquaman #12

Massive cliffhanger, especially heading into zero month. I like this new Aquaman.

Things I liked: Aquaman takes damage from bullets. Not a lot, but enough that there's something that hurts him.

Things I didn't like: still don't like Mera, though I did like her interactions with Ya'wara. Maybe she'll leave him when she finds out he's not perfect.

Friday, October 5, 2012

All-Star Western #12

Jonah Hex is such a great character.  I love how the series is about him but is told from other character's perspectives.

Things I liked: Tallulah kicked some major ass this issue.  I don't think she's sticking around much longer but she's making a case for being nearly as interesting as Hex.

Things I didn't like: the back story was meh.  I do like Dr. Thirteen, but I don't think he was used to his full potential in these stories.  They felt rushed and unfinished.

Thursday, October 4, 2012

Green Lantern New Guardians #12

I'm not quite sure how Sayd expected Kyle to lead anything. I'm not even sure of his place in the Corps.

Things I liked: when they work together, they work well.

Things I didn't like: it was a bad plan. A bad plan to begin with.

Tuesday, October 2, 2012

DC Universe Presents #12

I'm not a big fan of Bart Allen. I do like the way Fabian Nieciza writes him but I miss Wally in the new 52.

Things I liked: Nieciza does a good job of portraying the world of a speedster. I always imagine everything going just a little too slowly for them.

Things I didn't like: the whole dinosaur island was hard, but dino people? Just a little too much for me.

Sunday, September 30, 2012

Catwoman #12

Really good issue. One of my favourites so far.

Things I liked: her knowing when to call in Batman, the art, the reveal of her best friend/fence killing Spark. There were too many to choose just one.

Things I didn't like: Dollhouse seemed to take Selena down too easily. The Cat has moves.

Friday, September 28, 2012

Batwoman #12

Man! They managed to for a whole lot of dialogue in this issue. It was stuck in all over the place.

Things I liked: when Wonder Woman was thinking about how her team mates would view her actions she said Batman and Aquaman would approve but Clark would not. I like that only Superman gets the first name.

Things I didn't like: while it was an interesting story I got the feeling theat the writer really wanted to do a Wonder Woman story and was using Batwoman to do it. There was a lot of build up to a team up. Maybe too much.

Thursday, September 27, 2012

Nightwing #0

This one had almost everything that makes Nightwing a great character.

Things I liked: the parkour skills make sense, the acrobatics, his ability to read people being turned to detective skills. Dick was primed to be something great. I guess it was supposed to be a Talkn. His age was really bumped up too. I guess getting his start at 15 makes sense but I'm used to him being a Robin at 9.

Things I didn't like: where's Bruce as a father figure? He put him in an orphanage for 3 years? I'm hoping that they just forgot to mention that he was taken into Bruce's home and eventually adopted. That that happened just after the events in this issue.

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

Red Hood and the Outlaws #0

Nice to see Jason's origin remains largely unscathed.

Things I liked: switching out stealing the Batmobile's tires to stealing from Leslie. It's much more realistic.

Things I didn't like: while the Joker's story was amusing. I don't think it could have happened. The way it's told, the Joker would have to know who Batman is. He doesn't. And he's been very careful to keep it that way.

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Justice League #0

So that's the origin of Captain Marvel, huh? There were parts of it I really liked, parts of it I'm not so sure. I guess every one else on the team has their own series to do the origins in but I'm not sure where Captain Marvel fits in the League.

Things I liked: that Billy's still a kid and the Captain often reflects that. I hope they remember that he also has the wisdom of Solomon.

Things I didn't like: his new cape. The half-cape had a lot more style. He's also looking a lot bulkier in the chest. Almost cartoonishly so.

Monday, September 24, 2012

Wonder Woman #0

Oh so corny.

Things I liked: it was kind of a nice throwback.

Things I didn't like: I was hoping for a bit more insight into how Azarello sees Wonder Woman. This was a joke.

Sunday, September 23, 2012

Young Justice #20

Not in favour of the time jump so soon but do like what they've done with it. Quick and easy catch up of where everyone is.

Things I liked: continuing the proud tradition of Dick being the slut of the DC Universe.

Things I didn't like: Clark seemed kind of thrown in there. Nice to see him and Superboy get along but it was still unsatisfying.

Superboy #12

Lots of questions about Superboy, but very few answers.

Things I liked: Superboy's snarkiness is growing on me.

Things I didn't like: this story seemed to appear out of nowhere. I get that his landlady is rich, but why would she party with him? And why would he agree?

Resurrection Man #12

Oh man! I had planned to save some money and wait on buying the 0 issues until they were collected but I want to see how this ends!

Things I liked: I did not see that coming. Completely took me by surprise.

Things I didn't like: this series is being cancelled. In some ways it's good. I think they were running out of ways to kill him, but I enjoyed it.

Ravagers #4

There's a lot of angst going on in this title, and I'm not quite sure where it's all coming from.

Things I liked: Gar's connection to the Red. I hope they work in something from Animal Man here.

Things I didn't like: their ruthlessness. Not one of them has compassion for human life in any capacity. I do hope they get Lightning back though. I will miss her.

Saturday, September 22, 2012

Legion Lost #12

Secrets were sort of revealed this issue. I just wish I knew what more of them meant.

Things I liked: Timber Wolf's return. Nothing keeps him down for long.

Things I didn't like: their plan to get rid of Alastor. I'm not sure how they came up with it. And Drake was right. It was too melodramatic.

Green Lantern Corps #12

The more Green Lantern I read, the less I like the Guardians.

Things I liked: I'm going to miss Varix.

Things I didn't like: I don't like where the Guardians are going with this. Also, not looking forward to a series crossover event when I don't really like the Red Lanterns.

Demon Knights #12

When Vandal Savage betrayed them I was a little surprised. Not so much when it was Etrigan.

Things I liked: good story. The whole idea of Morgana le Fay wanting Merlin's body so she could live on was interesting. I like the plan she put together, even though she's obviously insane.

Things I didn't like: the betrayals are too close together. It's basically two in one year. Hard to build the team that way.

Friday, September 21, 2012

Batman #0

I'm enough of a geek that I know when I see the Red Hood Gang that it means the Joker isn't far behind.

Things I liked: I actually liked the backup story more than the main this issue. Bruce feeling out being a vigilante and making mistakes is always a good read but the simplicity of the Bat Signal and what it means was done really well. It was fun to see all Batman's Robins before he interacted with them.

Things I didn't like: Gordon immediately suspecting Bruce of being the vigilante. Not much to go on there. And in the backup, Tim was the only Robin that felt off to me. Nice to point out that he's the genius, he just seemed too cocky.

Batgirl #0

I hope that they go back and explore some of the ideas that were raised in this story. I would've liked to have had more than one issue for this story.

Things I liked: how she became Batgirl. Much better than the original origin.

Things I didn't like: they didn't answer how she learned to walk again. It also highlights a problem with the abbreviated history of the new 52. I don't know where Batman found the time. And she was only Batgirl for a year.

Thursday, September 20, 2012

Batman and Robin #0

This issue did answer a lot of my questions about Damian. Except the how. I really wonder where they got Batman's generic material to make him Damian's father. It's important to how Bruce sees him in my opinion.

Things I liked: the scene where Damian finds the cowl. It's the one part where he actually looks like a child.

Things I didn't like: how ruthless he was. He's turning into a hero, a bit more questioning of Talia's motives would have been nice. Though, admittedly probably not in character for a 10 year old and his mother.

Worlds' Finest #4

I'm very interested in where this is going. I want to see them interact more with Earth 1.

Things I liked: Helena's musings on her "not-father".

Things I didn't like: why tear Power Girl's terrible uniform.

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

Swamp Thing #12

Sneaky, sneaky. Great ideas in this one, mostly successful.

Things I liked: the idea of Buddy's connection to the Red being weaker near the Rot.

Things I didn't like: time jump. It's a hard story to tell.

Saturday, September 15, 2012

Stormwatch #12

I liked Martian Manhunter being part of Srowmwatch. It felt more like part of the universe that way.

Things I liked: Jenny's 13, huh? This is the first time she's been drawn that way. Makes more sense now.

Things I didn't like: mind wipes. I hate mind wipes.

Friday, September 14, 2012

Green Lantern #12

They sure like to make Hal the villain. Even with Sinestro right there!

Things I liked: getting a better handle on who Black Hand is now. He's kind of a creepy villain.

Things I didn't like: the Guardians' plan to get rid of all the Lantern Corps. I think this "Rise of the Third Army" arc is going to be a bit of a slog.

Thursday, September 13, 2012

Earth 2 #4

I'm almost ashamed to admit that I didn't know it was the Atom until Hawkgirl called him Al.

Things I liked: nice team building. Everyone has a place.

Things I didn't like: looks like the obligatory superhero showdown is coming up.

Dial 'H' for Hero #4

I always feel like I'm reading a novel when I read this series.

Things I liked: Manteau is an old woman, I didn't see that coming.

Things I didn't like: Abyss' word balloons were hard to read. Not only did the order not make sense, the colouring faded into the background.

Animal Man #12

This is where it starts to get good. I can't wait to see Buddy and Alec versus the Rot.

Things I liked: Mary's speech to Buddy before sending him off. I liked what she had to say and I'm glad she said it.

Things I didn't like: Ellen is totally going mother bear. It's starting to wear thin. I get that she's overwhelmed but it's the same note issue after issue.

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Detective Comics #0

I think I'm going to like 0 month. It's giving me a lot of the origins that I'm missing.

Things I liked: a couple of things actually. They avoided doing another telling of the deaths of Bruce's parents and they told what Alfred was going through while Bruce was traveling the world.

Things I didn't like: while I liked the parallels of Bruce's time in China with the Zen master, they fell into the James Bond trap that Batman has with women. It's just not safe.

Saturday, September 8, 2012

Aquaman #11

Really enjoying this look into Arthur's past. There seems to be so much from which to draw.

Things I liked: the confrontation at the open doors of the hanger. It's very much the Aquaman I remember.

Things I didn't like: Mera is annoying. I can't get past that.

Detective Comics Annual #1

I'm still not familiar with the Black Mask so I can't say if this is a new origin for him or not, but I did really enjoy it.

Things I liked: the story gripped me the whole way through. I'm glad they chose to do this as an annual. I do 't think I could have waited monthly.

Things I didn't like: a little more background would have been nice. I feel like I'm still trying to catchup here.

Monday, September 3, 2012

Justice League #12

Boo! Hiss! I'm not a fan of a hook up between Superman and Wonder Woman.

Things I liked: Steve Trevor kicked some serious ass this issue. And she still dumped him!

Things I didn't like: besides the kiss. I didn't like how they all broke up. The infighting is very petty and, while I can see it from Aquaman, Batman seemed out of character.

Sunday, September 2, 2012

Justice League International Annual #1

Wow! When they decide to cancel a bunch of series they don't fool around!

Things I liked: mention of the Global Guardians. Some part of me hopes they'll get their own series and that Fire and Ice will be able to join again. I guess even Vixen (but she was never a Guardian).

Things I didn't like: Booster and Beetle just disappear? Beetle has some chance of being picked up by a multitude of colorful Lanterns, but Booster? He could be any when.

Young Justice #19

It was interesting to see all the gorilla origin stories condensed into one story. It's a reminder on just how many gorillas DC has.

Things I liked: it was all told from Robin's point of view. Of all of them he is most likely to keep "case files".

Things I don't like: still feels rushed into Invasion. I would have liked to see a few more stories with the original crew. Hopefully there'll lots of flashbacks to explain why they are where they are.

Friday, August 31, 2012

Superman #11

That actually makes sense. I always wondered how he managed to fit all that suit under his clothes, especially his boots.

Things I liked: Lucy's flirting was fun. I still always think of her as more Jimmy's girl but I guess Clark isn't that much older now.

Things I didn't like: Lois belongs with Clark. I don't like him with Wonder Woman (soon according to news sources) and her with someone else.

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Savage Hawkman #11

You get one more shot Liefeld. Then I'm outta here. This issue was dumb. Really, really dumb. Someone's been reading the Davinci Code and tried to write something similar. But really? You're a renowned linguist and you take your scroll to a Catholic cult? Did not work for me.

Things I liked: um... at least Liefeld's not doing the art.

Things I didn't like: it failed in so many places. Mostly it was completely unbelievable, even for a superhero comic.

Green Lantern New Guardians #11

The gang's all together again to take down Larfreeze. But why? Why do they all have to be there?

Things I liked: I'm going to miss Glommy too.

Things I didn't like: I don't understand why the Guardian wanted all the Lanterns to join up. It doesn't fit. I had to check to see of this title was being cancelled due to the word choice of the next box and the mission the group had.

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Fury of Firestorm the Nuclear Men #11

I'm kind of wondering when Ronnie's costume changed. I know he merged with Pohzar at the end but I suspect that's it's an unstable form. I think only he and Jason can form up.

Things I liked: Ronnie's not totally fooled by Pohzar. He'll still stand up for what's right.

Things I didn't like: the issue moved a little too fast, the climax didn't have enough time to peak.

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

The Flash #11

Barry meets more of his rogues. The new Heat Wave is very interesting, though I'm curious as to why they all have powers now.

Things I liked: Barry's stint as a bartender.

Things I didn't like: I still don't like that he faked his own death.

Monday, August 27, 2012

Batman Incorporated #2

Talia is creepy. Creepier than I thought she was. I'm trying to figure out how to classify what she did to Bruce to get Damian.

Things I liked: a good recap on who Talia is and why she's dangerous.

Things I didn't like: the story is moving too fast. I think Morrison wants to continue his pre-52 story and is just rushing the plot back to where it was. It doesn't make sense to have renumbered it if that's the case.

All-Star Western #11

I'm beginning to like Tallulah Black almost as much as I like Jonah Hex.

Things I liked: Tallulah's monologue was hilarious. As a woman I could relate to her frustrations.

Things I didn't like: the Doctor Thirteen story was only OK.

Sunday, August 26, 2012

Teen Titans #12

Had to laugh when I saw the cover. The running joke is that Wonder Woman is into bondage because of how often she's tied up in her own comic. Here, Wonder Girl has Red Robin and Superboy tied up.

Things I liked: the growing relationship between Tim, Kon and Cassie.

Things I didn't like: don't like Diesel. So far he's very cliche.

Batman: the Dark Knight #12

This issue was full of pros and cons for me. I'm just going to get right to it.

Things I liked: Scarecrow's background with his father made him a more sympathetic character. I like what they did with him here.

Things I didn't like: Thomas Wayne's coldness. The best thing about Batman's family is that his dad has always been everything he couldn't be - warm, caring, open and understanding.

Friday, August 24, 2012

Supergirl #11

Supergirl is so cute when she's not trying to be tough.

Things I liked: her first date with Tom, it's not going to go anywhere but they were a cute couple.

Things I didn't like: the nefarious underplot. It seems out of place in this story.

Green Lantern Corps #11

This has the feel of gearing up for something bigger. I don't think the alpha Manhunter was it.

Things I liked: John and Guy kicked ass.

Things I didn't like: I don't get their plan.

Green Lantern #11

I don't know who Black Hand is and why they're so worried about him. I do know that he's very, very creepy.

Things I liked: Sinestro's "Batcave".

Things I didn't like: the Indigo tried really just took Hal on his word. He was as big (if not bigger) a villain as Sinestro. I would've thought they'd nokify him too.

Thursday, August 23, 2012

DC Universe Presents #11

I've like the Vandal Savage storyline in this arc. It's been my favourite so far to be honest. Savage is becoming one of my favourite villains.

Things I liked: him trying to convince his daughter that he loved her (as much as he loves anyone) because he put her before his own self interests. It's interesting because of what I've been reading in Demon Knights.

Things I didn't like: the motives of the copycat. I can see the rage at Savage because of his father, adding the mutation in on top didn't work for me.

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Catwoman #11

Catwoman wasn't burned nearly as badly as I expected when Spark was revealed last issue. Maybe next time.

Things I liked: the streak of good she's got in her.

Things I didn't like: the plot's too similar to a Criminal Minds episode I've seen a few too many times.

Monday, August 20, 2012

Batwoman #11

I'm glad this arc is finished. It never really made that much sense. I know it's not the last we'll see of these characters which I like. I just didn't like how the story was constructed.

Things I liked: Maggie and Kate sharing their personal lives with each other.

Things I didn't like: Bette miraculously coming out of her coma. People that are being considered as organ donors don't just wake up with some words from a loved one.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #12

So Kori's developing actual feelings for Roy, huh? Some part of me wants it to be in his imagination.

Things I liked: continued to like Roy's voice as the narrator.

Things I didn't like: Kori's forgotten all about Dick again.

Sunday, August 19, 2012

Nightwing #12

Nightwing. Once again, hero most likely to end up in a puddle of his own blood.

Things I liked: this Sonia Zucco/Branch storyline has two ways it can go. She's either going to turn into an LI that meets a terrible end or she's a villain. She's already lied to you Dick. Expect the villain.

Wonder Woman #12

And thus concludes the Zola gives birth story. All in all I enjoyed this story. I really like how the gods look and I like how Wonder Woman is characterized.

Things I liked: Hermes stealing the baby. He is the god of thrives and he's done it for Zeus before.

Things I didn't like: Hermes giving Diana a feather do she could fly. I thought she could already fly. I haven't noticed her not flying in the new 52.

Friday, August 17, 2012

Superboy #11

Slowly, slowly a personality emerges. He's still learning.

Things I liked: I think Bunker was the best choice for this story and this story needed to be told. Superboy has been raised to be a weapon, we need to know why he's going to choose to be a hero.

Things I didn't like: Bunker's brick can join ugliest tattoos. Especially considering it's the same place that did the amazing bar code S-shield.

Resurrection Man #11

Resurrection Man sort of highlights just how easily it should be for some of these heroes to die.

Things I liked: I really want to see where this story is going. I like the way his past is slowly being teased out.

Things I didn't like: why is it so hard for him to find one person who's not out to get him?

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Ravagers #3

Pretty fancy placement to keep Thunder and Lightning's junk from showing during a fight.

Thing I liked: I like this new Beast Boy. The red is a little hard to get used to but it's growing on me.

Things I didn't like: poor Thunder. Something's just not right with this boy.

Legion Lost #11

I really hope this is building up to something because, so far, it's a pretty blah story.

Things I liked: Timber Wolf stumbled upon the right person when he decided to turn to crime.

Things I didn't like: the implication that Dawnstar has a thing for Brin. While I agree that there's not much happening with her and Drake, I've not seen signs for her and Timber Wolf. Timber Wolf seems attached to Yera.

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

Demon Knights #11

I've read a lot of Arthurian legends and I don't recall anything about him being a child of the Fay. Works for the story though.

Things I liked: Etrigan being power mad. His transformation was really the only one that made sense.

Things I didn't like: why does Exoristos have such a low opinion of herself?

Batman and Robin #12

Sadly the most interesting thing in this story was Damian trying to prove he was the best of the Robins, and I was disappointed in the end of that.

Things I liked: all the former Robins joining up to defeat the underlings. I would have liked to see more of that.

Things I didn't like: apparently, Damian did go after Time first - his hated Robin and then Jason. Jason's battle was a bit more definitive than Tim's, it seemed more like a win. If I were Damian, I would be totally dissatisfied with Dick's concession. He just handed over an escrima stick! I think Dick actually wins this round. He's also probably the only one that Damian doesn't have to prove himself to.

Batman #12

I really, really liked this issue. Batman was hardly in it but the reaction of the "common man" was great.

Things I liked: the characters were all done well. I never felt anyone was out of place.

Things I didn't like: the incidental villain was kind of lame.

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Batgirl #12

This story has been odd. I still don't get Knightfall's motivation.

Things I liked: Batgirl's estimation of Batwoman being off.

Things I didn't like: why is it that two heroes have to fight the first time they meet?

Worlds' Finest #3

Helena is very much like her father. And Karen is not afraid to use her body to get her way. I am curious what she offered to pay her geniuses.

Things I liked: the art had a really playful look in the flashbacks.

Things I didn't like: I think she's trying to lay low. A giant monster battle in Japan is not going to do that.

Swamp Thing #11

I love an issue that makes me look forward to next month.

Things I liked: finally! The Bakers have made it to the swamp.

Things I didn't like: I would have liked a little visual on how the Parliament saved Alec from the unmen.

Stormwatch #11

Anytime a character solves the problem by absorbing it I expect the problem to come back to bite them in the ass. I expect no different here.

Things I liked: it was interesting seeing it from Angie's view. I'm starting to warm to her as a character.

Things I didn't like: I'm trying to ignore the evolutionary implications that this plot line introduced. I really am.

Earth 2 #3

That's a very different start to Earth 2's Green Lantern. He's still involved with the railway, but now he's the Jade Knight? I'm curious if they're going to redo the whole society. They've got Hawkgirl, Flash and Green Lantern. Atom Smasher is coming. I'm not sure who they're going to use as the Batman and Superman analogues with Power Girl and Huntress in Worlds' Finest.

Things I liked: Alan's new costume is so much better.

Things I didn't like: the little speech over what I'm assuming was his lover's body. It didn't make sense if he's chosen to have a secret identity.

Dial 'H' for Hero #3

There is so much more to this story than just a schlub who becomes a superhero.

Things I liked: the mystery. It's a really well written mystery.

Things I didn't like: I don't get why Manteau is so freaky.

Animal Man #11

This is just such a great series. I always want to read it again just after I finished it.

Things I liked: the rebuilding of Animal Man was really cool.

Things I didn't like: that they've given him some shape shifting abilities.

Thursday, August 9, 2012

Justice League International #12

Just when it starts to get interesting again, they cancel it. I'm disappointed. I liked this title. It wasn't always the deepest comic I was reading, but I always liked reading it.

Things I liked: even though there was a fight and everyone was in costume this was probably the most human story.

Things I didn't like: the fight seemed a little forced. Like no one really wanted to do it.

Detective Comics #12

The one positive about Batman Inc. is that Bruce Wayne can patent some of these gadgets and make billions. A foam that stops nuclear meltdown?

Things I liked: I like that Snyder really works on the detective aspect of Batman.

Things I didn't like: not the best story. It was a little too far fetched for a Batman story.

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

Voltron #6

The artist uses a very thick pen on the inking. I find it very distracting.

Things I liked: yay! Sven!

Things I didn't like: the rescuing of Lance happened much too quickly. Having just the first page be the Voltron force and the rest Zarkon's delusions was not what I was looking for.

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

Superman #10

There were some really interesting ideas raised here. Unfortunately, I don't think Dan Jurgens was the author to explore them. I like that he tried.

Things I liked: Jimmy's growing on me. He's not so "golly gee" as I remember him.

Things I didn't like: all tied up too tidily. There's a few things that could have carried over into future issues.

Savage Hawkman #10

I want to see where this story goes, but I'm honestly not that interested in how it's getting there.

Things I liked: the art is a little on the 80s side but I kind of like the detail.

Things I didn't like: Liefeld spends too much time telling the reader what happened rather than letting the panels show it.

Friday, August 3, 2012

Fury of Firestorm #10

India's firestorm protocol with the multiple arms looks really neat. It makes Ronnie and Jason look like they lack in imagination.

Things I liked: Ronnie's story is really heating up. There's so much going on for him. I worry that Pozhar will break him.

Things I didn't like: Jason, on the other hand, is still a bit of a jerk. Hopefully he's beginning to realize that he needs to find his partner.

Thursday, August 2, 2012

The Flash #10

Barry sure gave up on Iris quickly. I wonder in this is Johns' way of saying that there will never be a Kid Flash.

Things I liked: new Golden Glider looks cool.

Things I didn't like: Barry's decision to make it look like he's still dead. No secret identity for the Flash limits his potential.

Aquaman #10

Aquaman's always had anger issues (well, at least since the eighties) but I didn't expect this.

Things I liked: that they're really expanding on his character.

Things I didn't like: I can't see him as a killer.

All-Star Western #10

I enjoyed the back up story on this one a lot. There's something about Bat Lash that I've always liked. It's nice to see some of these characters again.

Things I liked: Tallulah truely worries Arkham. It makes me laugh.

Things I didn't like: there is an element of cliche in some of these stories. I think it gets a by because they're in the old west (or east I guess since its Gotham).

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

Batman: The Dark Knight #11

I'm enjoying this team much more than the last. It's more about the story than about how many guest appearances they can make.

Things I liked: Batman's interaction with the victim was again a nice touch. They're not afraid to pause.

Things I didn't like: Scarecrow's second victim is a little too mature.

Monday, July 30, 2012

Teen Titans #11

I sure hope there's an origin story for Wonder Girl coming up soon. I'm not familiar with this version at all.

Things I liked: I find it amusing that they're all hanging out at Tim's penthouse without him there. Especially since he's considered breaking up the team.

Things I didn't like: I don't get the "bad boy" Superboy. He doesn't seem that way in his own title, but here he is moving in with a girl and sporting a tattoo.

Saturday, July 28, 2012

Supergirl #10

There's a few things that I'm waiting for with this series: for her to learn English, and for there to be some explanation why everyone loves Superman but hates her.

Things I liked: pretty cool fight scene. Just seemed to be all there was.

Things I didn't like: not sure where they're going with Siobhan and her brother.

Green Lantern Corps #10

Damn it! This series makes me like Guy Gardner.

Things I liked: Guy's escape plan was rather brilliant.

Things I didn't like: the Guardians' plan really makes them look like dicks.

Friday, July 27, 2012

DC Universe Presents #10

I like Vandal Savage more and more. He looks like a really fun character to write.

Things I liked: his escape was suitably crazy.

Things I didn't like: the amount of pull his daughter has. It seems she's beyond her years.

Thursday, July 26, 2012

Catwoman #10

Spark's double crossing her? That's so unexpected. Sort of. Once he kissed her it was coming. She has terrible taste in men.

Things I liked: showing up at the detective's apartment had style.

Things I didn't like: she was in a position that made her look sexy, and I don't think was physically possible if she had a spine.

Batwoman #10

If there's any title I should drop it's this one. I just keep coming back for the art.

Things I liked: the freaks getting freakier.

Things I didn't like: everything with Bette is becoming so cliche.

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

Nightwing #11

I'm actually a little disappointed in this issue. Maybe I was expecting too much, but I'm a little let down.

Things I liked: Dick's moping in the Batcave. He has a flair for the dramatic.

Things I didn't like: unless Dick tracks her down and apologizes, the potential storyline between him and Sophia is deaf in the water. I said I thought I'd seen it before, but I did want to see what Higgins was planning to do with it.

Monday, July 23, 2012

Red Hood and the Outlaws #11

Scott Lobdell has way too much fun writing for Arsenal.

Things I liked: Roy's stalling tactic was expected but I liked the way he told the story.

Things I didn't like: Jason's date (according to Roy anyway) seems to be taking this much too well. The one problem with telling the story from one character's point of view is remembering not to include things he didn't see.

Justice League #11

Graves is the best kind of villain. He goes out of his way to taunt his victims.

Things I liked: Wonder Woman can really throw down if she feels the need.

Things I didn't like: what's up with Cyborg? Though I did like Batman's "reassurances".

Sunday, July 22, 2012

Young Justice #18

Rushing forward to season 2. I was hoping they'd stick with the original team for a bit longer, but it really looks like they're plowing ahead.

Things I liked: very tight with the chronology. I know exactly where this takes place. It was great that Robin gave the gorillas the most trouble.

Things I didn't like: the Brain's mash up of French and English. It was too much. A phrase, or a word, is more realistic.

Wonder Woman #11

I'm beginning to think that the child of prophesy is Diana; not whomever Zola is carrying.

Things I liked: Artemis' new look is incredible.

Things I didn't like: calling Demeter Harvest. It doesn't quite capture her nature.

Swamp Man #10

Creepy. That's all there is to it. Scott Snyder is creepy and he writes creepy things that creep me out.

Things I liked: keeping the identity of who Arcane was talking to a surprise until the end. There were a couple of possibilities and it could have gone either way.

Things I didn't like: the art was a little off in this one. When Abigail said Alec was injured, I was having a hard time figuring out how she knew.

Superboy #10

I sense a love triangle coming on. Sort of. I don't think Cassie will actually fall for Superboy or Red Robin, but I think they'll try competing for her.

Things I liked: the relationship between the two was fun to read. Very Tracy/Hepburn. Cliched, but still fun.

Things I didn't like: while I did like Superboy acting more like a teen it seems to have come on him rather quickly. I wish he were even more awkward.

Saturday, July 21, 2012

Resurrection Man #10

I really like the new artist. The series looks more like the covers.

Things I liked: Mitch's deal. I can't think it'll go well for him but I want to see where it goes.

Things I didn't like: Kim's a little too powerful for what she says she can do. It's doing more than it feels it should.

Ravagers #2

Ravagers seems to be the place they're sticking all the Teen Titans stuff they didn't want to use.

Things I liked: Thunder letting loose. I was beginning to think he was damaged.

Things I didn't like: Lightning selling them out. I don't understand her motivations.

Legion Lost #10

I've decided that I'm reading this title mostly for Timber Wolf. And they keep shooting him.

Things I liked: Brin's pal trying to play the system.

Things I didn't like: internally inconsistent. I thought with the new 52 that time travel forward was impossible. Yet, here they're able to go past where they left. At least it was completely changed. I don't think any trip to the past could maintain the future.

Friday, July 20, 2012

Demon Knights #10

They're all getting really chummy with one another, aren't they? This was a transition issue. They're really just traveling between stories. The next one looks really interesting.

Things I liked: Vandal Savage hitting the sea monster.

Things I didn't like: Exoritas seems a bit too flirty.

Thursday, July 19, 2012

Batgirl #11

The justice system in Gotham is messed up. They sent an 18 year old girl to Arkham. Sure, she wasn't criminally responsible for the crime, but there's got to be entry level psychiatric hospitals in the area.

Things I liked: James is super creepy. He seems to be stalking Barbara's room mate, but is really giving her a cat. I've been reading some feminist literature lately and am curious if Simone is going to succumb to her own lady in the refrigerator.

Things I didn't like: I don't get where this cop is coming from. Barbara's questions are enough to get the gun back on her?

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Batman #11

This one made me laugh out loud. I really like the way Snyder writes the relationship between Dick and Bruce.

Things I liked: the resolution of the story line. I liked the Court of Owls story arc. It gave the city character and introduced some interesting elements into the Bat mythos.

Things I didn't like: Batman's free fall. There's no way any line could stop him from splatting.

Batman and Robin #11

So Damian begins his crusades against Robins to Jason. I suppose that makes sense, Jason is considered the worst Robin. It's also kind of obvious. I would have thought his first target was Tim. It seemed it was, but maybe there will be another meeting.

Things I liked: Robin riding off with the Red Hood mask tied to the front of his cycle. It was almost joyful. I like Damian happy.

Things I didn't like: that Damian's crusade was more interesting than the actual story for this issue.

Friday, July 13, 2012

Detective Comics #11

So the radioactive man is also a clone. Interesting, and his clones were robbing banks as Batman. This is not the strongest storyline.

Things I liked: Batman's escape was pretty cool. Thanks to Alfred.

Things I didn't like: Bruce Wayne displayed a little too much scientific knowledge. We know he knows it but I like it better when Wayne plays dumb.

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Justice League International #11

Finally! There's the payoff for all that flirtation. Though I kind of wish that she'd been the one to kiss him; she has been the aggressor for most of the time they've been together.

Things I liked: they worked well together and Booster showed some leadership. I thought Guy might make a play for top dog, but I think Booster impressed him.

Things I didn't like: the brother of the villain that was killed leapt to the conclusion the it was the JLI's fault and vowed revenge. It's cliche.

On a side note, they need more women on the team. It was well balanced before, but with Fire, Ice and Vixen all sidelined in the first arc, it's turned into a sausage feat.

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

Worlds' Finest #2

I like how the story is slowly being teased out. I want to see where it goes.

Things I liked: looks like Wayne Enterprises has caught on to Helena's little scheme.

Things I didn't like: how they keep downplaying the new world they're in. It may be a coping mechanism, but it's annoying.

Saturday, July 7, 2012

Voltron Year One #3

Wow! This is really intense. Doesn't quite feel like the Voltron Force but it's entertaining.

Things I liked: the plan. Taking out all those people at once was a neat bit of strategy.

Things I didn't like: Sven taking pills. Not so much that he is, but that there's no indication of what they are to let the reader know why it's bad. Maybe that's just my job getting in the way of the story.

Stormwatch #10

Some consistency might be nice. Just last issue Midnighter thought the Batman was the man. Now they don't really know who he is.

Things I liked: that Gotham would be untrusting of Jack. It fits.

Things I didn't like: Apollo's hissy fit. It doesn't fit. I get it, but I don't think it's appropriate.

Earth 2 #2

Earth 2 continues to impress. Jay's new origin story is so much better than the original.

Things I liked: Jay testing out his new powers.

Things I didn't like: Alan Scott being gay seemed forced. I'm not opposed to him being gay, I'm just not sure I liked how it was introduced.

Friday, July 6, 2012

Dial 'H' for Hero #2

This is the great thing about having novelists write comics. They remember to do things like foreshadowing and character development. Sometimes it happens in superhero comics, but not usually right at the beginning.

Things I liked: the story is very intriguing. I like that there's a bigger thing going on here than just him being able to get powers.

Things I didn't like: he's not the most admirable main character. It's hard to root for him when he's a bit of a putz.

Thursday, July 5, 2012

Animal Man #10

I wonder if those involved with this project sit around of new ways to be creepy. Because flying dog-men freaked me out.

Things I liked: the phrase "Fetch the tailor" when applied to getting Buddy a new body.

Things I didn't like: Ellen Barker. She's been with Buddy long enough that she should know what she can handle and when she should accept help.

Animal Man Annual #1

I waited a month hoping it would drop in price, but it didn't. I bought it anyway and I'm glad I did. It isn't totally necessary for the continuation of the story, but it was a great story.

Things I liked: that the Green, the Red and the Rot maintain a balance. The story's always better if the bad guys aren't as bad, or the good guys could be under different circumstances.

Things I didn't like: that Buddy seems to be giving up. I'm not sure why Jacob was seeing into the future, but it was kind of bleak.

Wednesday, July 4, 2012

Voltron #5

Oh no! Not Lance! He's my favourite. I think he's going to pull through, it's his way.

Things I liked: not afraid to hurt a main character. They're not going to get out of this unscathed.

Things I didn't like: Keith got Black Lion back a little too easily. I'm sort of waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Superman #9

Looks like Clark isn't being as careful with his secret identity as he ought to be.

Things I liked: I like that someone thought to put seedy tabloid into Metropolis.

Things I didn't like: that as soon as Superman sees someone else with powers he immediately attacks.

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

Savage Hawkman #9

Phew! Rob Liefeld didn't ruin this one too.

Things I liked: I actually kind of like the story. I want to see where it goes anyway.

Things I didn't like: it's a bit wordy. You'd think with Liefeld being an "artist" he wouldn't want to crowd out everything with dialogue boxes and word balloons.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #9

I still don't like the multiple colour corps, but I am enjoying the story of them all being targeted.

Things I liked: Saint Walker. He's growing on me.

Things I didn't like: it's not making much sense yet.

Fury of Firestorm #9

Jason's story totally doesn't interest me. Great, just regular superhero stuff. Ronnie's looks way more interesting.

Things I liked: the build up on what's happening to Ronnie.

Things I didn't like: there are too many Firestorm protocols running around. I can't keep track of them.

Sunday, July 1, 2012

Flash #9

Sadly, I saw the cover to this and my first thought made me think I might be reading too much fan fiction.

Things I liked: Gorilla Grodd is the right kind of creepy to be a super villain. You can totally ignore that he's a talking gorilla.

Things I didn't like: Barry seems a bit too prepared to just jump in and explain why he's been missing for so long. I was hoping he might have to be more flustered.

Saturday, June 30, 2012

Batman Incorporated #1

You know. I don't think Damian's dead. I think Batman is using Goatboy to get further into who's trying to kill Damian.

Things I liked: I do like Grant Morrison. He has a real feel for the history of the characters.

Things I didn't like: Damian looked way too young. He's supposed to be 10 or 11. He looked 6.

Aquaman #9

No laughs in this one. Very intense.

Things I liked: giving Aquaman a bit darker past. It gives him a reason to be a jerk at times.

Things I didn't like: I want a bit more background on this Other League before Manta kills them all.

All-Star Western #9

The crossover with a Night of Owls seemed really forced in this issue. A way to get Jonah's target dead without him shooting. Sort if like Han shooting first.

Things I liked: if Jonah's not careful he might even grow to like Arkham.

Things I didn't like: the Court of Owls thing didn't work here. I appreciate that they were trying to show that the Court has a long history in Gotham. I don't think this was the way to do it.

Friday, June 29, 2012

Batman: The Dark Knight #10

I have to check if this is a new creative team. There's certainly a shift in how the story's being told. It's no longer a contest to see how many guest stars it can fit into the run.

Things I like: I really like when comics take the pause. Not every panel has to be filled with dialogue or action. The sequence where Batman goes in to talk to Claire was really well done. That final panel of her reaching out and taking his hand was precious.

Things I didn't like: the author doesn't have a handle on Damian. He may look like a 10 year old (usually, he looked much younger here) but he doesn't talk like one.

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Teen Titans #10

The Culling is over and Red Robin asks the question we're all thinking, "Now what?". This is a nice little interlude to give the characters some time to be teens.

Things I liked: angsty, but not too angsty. They're thinking like terms but it's not devolving into emo.

Things I didn't like: the cover, once again. "Race into extinction"? More like race to teenage make out session.

Justice League #10

This new villain took them down ridiculously easy. I'm wondering where it can go from here.

Things I liked: expanding the background of these heroes a bit. I'm a fan at looking at where they came from and how it's shaped their characters.

Things I didn't like: I think that their losses should have been portrayed more graphically. As it is they're just writhing on the floor with weird colours around them. It could have been better.

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Supergirl #9

Hmmm... I'm not sure where they're going with this. I don't know if I'd classify that as giving herself freely. I can't think it'll end well for Black Banshee.

Things I liked: that common people will continue to try to help her. I hope she's getting a better idea of the planet.

Things I didn't like: there's a lot of exposition in this issue. I wish more could've been shown instead of said.

Green Lantern Corps #9

Hold up, the ones that bring the charge are the ones that decide the case? That just doesn't work. John's totally being railroaded.

Things I liked: the friendship between Guy and John. Guy's becoming a much more rounded character.

Things I didn't like: the Guardians' whole plan. It doesn't make sense to purposely smear the force they've got to create a new force. Someone's going to notice the pattern.

DC Universe Presents #9

I enjoyed this issue much more than I thought I would. After the disappointment that was the Challengers of the Unknown I figured that Vandal Savage would be the story that stopped me reading. I was wrong.

Things I liked: I enjoy Vandal Savage in Demon Knights but I didn't think they'd be able to carry the same feeling here. I was right. What they have done is keep the self-assuredness that Savage is known for and add a dash of crazy. They must think something is up with him because he's in Belle Reve, but they don't think he's what he says he is.

Things I didn't like: there's a "Silence of the Lambs" vibe here that I'm not enjoying. I think there were other ways of telling the story without ripping off the plot of a movie.

Monday, June 25, 2012

Catwoman #9

Another great tie in with Night of Owls. I was wondering how Catwoman was going to cross over and I felt this was done just right. It stood on its own merits and it added to the overall story.

Things I liked: Catwoman staring down the Talon. I like the way she thinks.

Things I didn't like: I'm still not sold on Spark. He seems to just be trying to get into her pants and doesn't seem to have that much to offer to her criminal lifestyle.

Batwoman #9

It's kind of hard to keep track of who's where with what. The time stamps try to help but there's a lot going on.

Things I liked: there's some really interesting panel placement in this issue. The story has flow.

Things I didn't like: I'm sure Batwoman is not do irresistible that any lesbian within 50m cannot help but be drawn into her embrace. It's a little overdone in my opinion.

Sunday, June 24, 2012

Nightwing #10

Dick sure doesn't make things easy for himself. Instead of going to Bruce with a financial opportunity he decides it would be better to hook up with the daughter of the man that murdered his parents. And I know he's going to hook up because he thinks she's cute and he's Dick Grayson. The only reason it's not a sure thing is that she's not a red head.

Things I liked: I really liked the emotion on the cover. I joke that Nightwing is the member of the Bat family to most likely end up in a puddle of his own blood but he really looks emotionally beaten too.

Things I didn't like: I feel like I just read this story. In Batman, just before the reboot, there was a story of Dick doing something with Sophia Zucco. He thought she wasn't affiliated with the mob (she was). And he thought that they might be able to have something together. Hopefully this story is different, and doesn't involve a killer whale.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #10

I can't help wondering if this is a response to the "Starfire is a bimbo" outcry from the new 52 or it was something they'd already planned. Here she's cuddling with Roy and being treated with respect by a whole crew of a spaceship.

Things I liked: Roy and Jason's relationship continues to make me happy. I still really think an appearance by Dick is needed but I like the way these characters interact.

Things I didn't like: I wonder where Jason keeps his helmet. It kind of appeared out of nowhere.

Saturday, June 23, 2012

Wonder Woman #10

I really like the colouring for this series. It's not often that I'd really notice something like the colour unless it was really off, but it's used to set the tone for this series in so many subtle ways.

Things I liked: the panel where Diana shoots Hades. Very nicely done.

Things I didn't like: Diana's "I love everyone" speech was a little sappy.

Friday, June 22, 2012

Young Justice #17

I wish they weren't afraid to do three part stories. The pay off just wasn't worth the set up.

Things I liked: Batman's disappearing act. Robin does try to take after his mentor.

Things I didn't like: not enough quips from Robin. He needs to be more vocal.

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Superboy #9

I can't wait for this Culling storyline to come to an end. It seems like I may have to be reading things in a certain order. Even things that come out in the same week.

Things I liked: there were some great facial expressions in this issue.

Things I didn't like: the crossover is crossing over too much.

Resurrection Man #9

Amanda Waller is a bad ass. She stole his hand!

Things I liked: the interaction between the two government agencies.

Things I didn't like: Mitch seemed a little dozy this issue and I'm not sure why.

Ravagers #1

It's probably a bad sign when all the characters' names are labeled on the cover.

Things I liked: I actually enjoyed the story more than I thought I would. I expected lots to teen angst but that was kept to a minimum. I really like this new Thunder and Lightning too.

Things I didn't like: there were too many filler characters that were just there to die. I've never liked red shirts. Also, half the team on the cover buggers off in the first couple of pages.

Legion Lost #9

I don't know what's worse, that all these series are teasing the identity of Harvest, or that it really crosses into all these series.

Things I liked: Wildfire's last stand was cool. Too bad it won't actually kill him. That would have been heroic.

Things I didn't like: Harvest's plan still doesn't make sense and essentially an issue ahead because I get Teen Titans in print.

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Grifter #9

Rob Liefeld presided over the demise of Hawk and Dove and I'm not confident he can take the reins here. At least he's not doing the art, and he's got someone else doing the dialogue.

Things I liked: not much to be honest. There was a lot of retreading what had come before and exposition of what will be coming but not much new.

Things I didn't like: the main point of the last issue was completely ignored. He was planning to bow out from the whole alien war thing, and now he plans to lead it? I don't buy it and I don't think I'll be buying Grifter.

Green Lantern #9

So the nine year old keeps asking which colour represents which emotion. I can never remember, there's too many of them now. Odd that the ring I could remember for compassion is essentially a penal colony.

Things I liked: Hal Jordan's "can do" attitude. He doesn't let anything stop him.

Things I didn't like: the brainwashing of the Indigo tribe. It's evil.

Demon Knights #9

All this time I thought the princesses of the city were sisters. I was not expecting lesbians waiting to marry until the city was chosen the new Camelot.

Things I liked: the various interpretations of Camelot that are being thrown around.

Things I didn't like: Etrigan's plan to sell them all to Hell. Vandal Savage's loyalty is already in question. Adding the Demon (and possibly Madame Xanadu) that mix makes me wonder why they'd ever stay together.

Saturday, June 16, 2012

Batgirl #10

I sort of like that Batgirl makes mistakes. She's new to being back in the game and she doesn't have the training that Dick, Jason, Tim and Damian have had so it makes sense.

Things I liked: that they're trying to differentiate Batgirl from all the other Bats in Gotham. Batwoman is handling the supernatural. Batman and Robin are doing big crime. That leaves little crime to Batgirl. But little crime can always get bigger.

Things I didn't like: I don't know about the constant trashing of Bruce Wayne's plans for the city. There must be someone happy that he's at least trying. He doesn't have an evil reputation, just an irrelevant one.

Batman #10

The biggest problem I had with Tim Burton's Batman was that he made the Joker the man that killed Bruce Wayne's parents. Scott Snyder has been threatening to do the same here with the Court of Owls being responsible. Worse, he's given Bruce a younger brother that apparently went crazy and that's been the problem. I think Batman's origin works best when it's random violence.

Things I liked: at least the story is engaging. I think Lincoln March is probably making things up. I think Bruce has always been a single child. I'm giving Snyder the benefit of doubt.

Things I didn't like: Alfred's dad in the back up story. Actually, Martha being pregnant in the back up story is a little off for me.

Batman and Robin #10

I don't think the grotesques introduced in this issue will become a fixture in Batman's rogues' gallery. The three guys melted into one and the man whose head has been impaled by a batarang were especially unbelievable. Though I have thought it narcissistic that Batman has his symbol imprinted on his boots.

Things I liked: the banter was quite well done. It was fun to see all the Robins in one place.

Things I didn't like: Damian's taken a step back. I don't think he was still in the place where he needed to prove himself before the reboot. I am curious if Tomasi is going to continue confronting Robins in future issues though.

Worlds' Finest #1

I enjoyed Earth 2 so much when I read it earlier I had high hopes for this one. I'll admit, I'm a little disappointed. I knew Karen Starr had made an appearance in Mr. Terrific but I was hoping to get a bit more background on these heroes. Instead they pop up the same time as the first wave and know right away they're on a different world. I'm hoping that they'll look a bit more into the past with this story.

Things I liked: the Huntress. She dies feel like Batman's daughter. I also liked that she had finished with the Helena Bertonelli identity. It makes things connect.

Things I didn't like: Power Girl's costume is terrible.

Swamp Thing #9

So Abby has powers, huh? Don't know how I feel about that. I liked that she was able to keep up even though she was "only" human.

Things I liked: that the panels are completely deconstructed. There's still flow, but no boxes.

Things I didn't like: Abby being part of the Rot. I'm not liking that she was chosen to be queen, seems as if she was a set up though, and Anton is the true avatar.

Stormwatch #9

This is the most interesting use I've seen for the Red Lanterns. I don't know why he was speeding towards Earth but it did reveal some interesting aspects of the Midnighter's personality.

Things I liked: the shot of Batman at the end. I felt it was what the Midnighter aspired to be but knew he could never reach.

Things I didn't like: how can Stormwatch not have heard of the Green Lanterns?

G.I Combat #1

Nope. Still don't like war stories. Even if they're more fantastical. It's not the quality of the story. I just don't like the genre.

Things I liked: both stories were well written and the first looked almost painted. Very nice to look at.

Things I didn't like: the genre. Updating the Unknown Soldier to the Afghan war didn't work for me either.

Earth 2 #1

Oh wow! Totally not what I was expecting when I added this. I thought it would be in the past, like the Justice Society, but this is so much better.

Things I liked: almost everything. Diana's costume stood out. Helen and Karen as Robin and Supergirl. Jay Garret getting his power from Mercury.

Things I didn't like: killing Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman. I get that they're the first generation of heroes but I don't know if Flash and Green Lantern are going to be enough to hold this together.

Dial 'H' for Hero #1

I heard that they were making this part of the second wave of the new 52 and I was excited. I knew of the original series but I'd never read it. But c'mon! A dial that can change you into a hero! That's every geek's fantasy.

Things I liked: this is superbly written. I was hooked early and it kept my attention the whole way through.

Things I didn't like: so far the heroes are a little lame. Not so much their powers but definitely their names. Chimney Boy and Captain Lachrymose are not names that strike fear. Rhey're names that encourage laughter.

Animal Man #9

These are so hard to stop after one issue, especially when I know the annual and #10 are available.

Things I liked: the story is just so intense. I can't wait to see where this is going.

Things I didn't like: Cliff Baker. I've had enough of him. He needs an attitude adjustment.

Justice League International #10

Super powered terrorists, huh? I suppose it was bound to happen. I suspect we'll see something different from Lightweaver soon though. I don't think he's the killing type.

Things I liked: the human moments between characters. It's nice to see them drop the mask.

Things I didn't like: again, one of Batman and Batwing needs to go. While I'm not keen on the character, Batwing is the obvious choice.

Detective Comics #10

Gotham is full of some pretty odd villains.   But I had no idea that they'd be able to find bozos who not only have the resources to replicate the Batsuit, but were willing to blow themselves up.  The premise seems really thin, but I've been enjoying Tony Daniel's work.

Things I liked: the fight sequence in the sewer was very dynamic.  Even though there were four Batmen I always knew which one was the real one.

Things I didn't like: Bruce's touching heart to heart with Charlotte Rivers.  I know she's supposed to be the current LI but I'm just not feeling it.

Young Justice #16

A bit of one on one time for the mentors and their apprentices. At least it establishes that Barry is faster than Wally. I saw it in the show and thought that it was odd that it had never come up before.

Things I liked: seeing the mentors mentoring. It makes the world more complete.

Things I didn't like: Batman and Robin's section. Robin was too quiet. Robin, especially Dick Grayson's Robin, always has something to say.

Batman Annual #1

This was a really interesting take on Mr. Freeze. I've always found him to be one of the most sympathetic Batman characters because his base motivation is love. But the idea that Nora was never really his wife, that he completely romanticized his relationship with her makes him tip over into the pit with the rest of the Batman crazies.

Things I liked: that Mr. Freeze has always been fascinated with cold. The interludes with his mother were very sad.

Things I didn't like: the story skipped around a little. There were points we're I wasn't sure if what I was reading was the true or Mr. Freeze's fantasy.

Voltron Year One #2

Wow! This was brutal. The actions of the three on the ground (Pidge, Sven and Lance) were bloody. I never pictured them like that. I wonder if Keith and Hunk can get there too.

Things I liked: the professionalism of the team. They come across as very military.

Things I didn't like: still not fond of Lance's characterization.

Superman #8

I've been thinking about this one for a while, it was honestly pretty forgettable.  Just another alien trying to convince Superman to join him.  It is the one thing I like about Superman's back story - Jonathan and Martha Kent remain just good people who really made Clark the way he is.

Things I liked: Superman's denial of the Daemonite.

Things I didn't like: the octopus thing that he pulled out of his mouth.  Yuck.

Savage Hawkman #8

You know, he is a lot meaner than I remember him being. I remember stoic, even a little stiff, but this Hawkman is willing to bash skulls.

Things I liked: his inner monologue. Tony Daniel is really good at getting into his characters' heads.

Things I didn't like: kind of a concourses plot. This girl that's been trying to kill him hasn't really been trying to kill him. Oh, wait, yes she is.

Green Lantern New Guardians #8

A place holder issue. They're just looking for a way to get to the next part of the story. I understand the need but I'm always disappointed when they happen.

Things I liked: if I were Kyle, I'd be concerned if Bleez wanted to be my personal escort.

Things I didn't like: Arkillo on Korugar. The yellow lanterns are not my favourite, I'd like to see them disappear.

Fury of Firestorm #8

I feel like I'm missing something here.  Ronnie's story seems to be exactly where I left it - being tortured by another Firestorm protocol.  But Jason's is very far afield.  What's he doing in Paris?

Things I liked: I wish a bit more time was spent on Ronnie this issue.  I think he's reaching a very interesting point that will turn him into a much different person.

Things I didn't like: a few too many Firestorms around.  And it seems like Firehawk and Hurricane are actual government licensed weapons, which is what I thought made Jason and Ronnie unique.  They got all the powers without the decline that seems present in the copies.  That they had a more pure matrix.

The Flash #8

I don't think I like the Speed Force as an actual place.  It's never really made that much sense to me and now it makes even less.  I like the premise for this story arc, just not the setting.

Things I liked: I don't think they've really explored the consequences of Flash's speed before.  There as an arc during the 1990s with Wally as the Flash that did the physical effects, but not something on this scale.

Things I didn't like: Turbine's echo.  I don't know if it's because he's crazy or slightly out of time, but it's annoying.

Aquaman #8

Reading Aquaman should not be this much fun!  It's Aquaman!  I'll admit, I've always been a bit of an Aquamn fan, I've always liked his look, but there's never been much there to be interesting.  This guy is difinitely interesting.  I'm looking forward to finding about more about his past.  I don't think much has been done with thise era of Aquaman, aside from maybe a mini-series in the 80s that put him in an Atlantian prison.

Things I liked: the pacing.  There's a page that's just a throw away joke, but by putting an extra panel in of Mera just looking at him it added a layer of timing that makes it work.

Things I didn't like: Mera has jumped on the jealousy ship hard.

All-Star Western #8

ZC is hella crazy. I like it. This is a great story. It really illustrates the pit bull nature of Jonah Hex. Even if it sounds crazy, he'll do it to get his man.

Things I liked: Dr. Arkham's psychoanalysis of his fellow inmate was hilarious. He's so out of his depth following Jonah around.

Things I didn't like: Arkham in the opium den was a little overdone. I get why he was there, I just thought it went a teeny bit too far.

Also really enjoy the Nighthawk and Cinnamon backup. They're a great team.

Teen Titans #9

Why do I have the horrible feeling that Harvest is Red Robin from the future?  It's not just the wings, or that Tim is the most likely Robin to actually become a villain (Jason doesn't count, he's not a villain, just very, very violent).  It's the elaborate plan and the too great knowledge of what will happen to them in the future.  It's the targeting of teen metas and the comment that the two of them would make a wonderful team.  When it happens you can tell people I predicted it.

Things I liked: the Superboy/Cassie team is fun to watch.  They're leaning a little heavily on the flirt but just watching the two of them kick ass is neat.

Things I didn't like: unlike "The Night of the Owls", "The Culling" is not self-contained in each title.  I feel that I've missed something by not having the latest Superboy or Legion Lost or especially The Ravagers.  It'll make more sense when I catch up I guess.
